After watching the news about the boy caught in the custody battle between his Brazilian relatives and American father, and reading up on some posts on VJ, I got to thinking about couples who were told NOT to date/marry their foreign spouse.

Were you told that you should be careful, or even not marry, your SO because of the country they come from? This could be for non USCs dating USCs as well.

I was just curious...hope the poll is not flawed

USC.

Only in passing/Hinted at to beware - by people I don't know/care about.

I don't care what people say.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

i am the usc

my family and friends all love my husband, but i did have a lady at my church who i barely speak to and has never spoken to my husband try to get my sisters to warn me. my sisters all but laughed in her face. i asked my mom if this lady ever spoken to her about it, and my mother said she isn't that daring, and better tend to her own business (go mom!)

i thought about the lady's warning, but that was all it was, a fleeting thought. just someone sticking their nose in where it doesn't belong.

Give Generously, Live Fully, Laugh Often, Love Completely...AND PRAY ALWAYS!!!

I had people warning me about things, and so did people on my husband's side warning him about how I am marrying him for GC and all I want is to bring my whole village to US.

Thankfully people who warned weren't close enough to be taken seriously or even being considered. Opinions are like a$$, everyone has one.

I'm the foreign spouse and although my friends and family always liked Luis some did say I was brave/nuts for marrying him and leaving Brasil. It wasn't about being him, or him being foreign, or the fact we dated 4 years where we could only visit twice a year during vacations, but 'cus I was taking a big step in leaving my country to come live with him.

I've got several brothers and guy friends and they all basically told me they didnt think I should go to Egypt alone (even though I offered several different people to go with me, no one said Yes) So I went alone. Everyone loves my husband and have been together for alittle over 4 yrs.

I'm the Foreign citizen.

My family LOVES Dave. He even managed to make peace between my mom and another relative with whom we weren't on very friendly terms. Mom was actually the one pushing me to go visit Dave for the first time when i was on the fence about going.

Dave was warned, for some reason especially by American women. His family were a little worried before they met me but once I hosted the whole family the day before Thanksgiving two years ago and they saw that I can cook and clean I think I won them over. :P

My only concern was making it from the airport to the hotel without being rolled. After that, it was just surviving a meeting with the parents. You take a chance when you meet someone over the internet, and a million things can go wrong when you go to visit them, alone, in a foreign country, thousands of miles away from the "safety" of the US.

I was old enough at the time not to take anything for granted, and had a pretty good idea what could happen along the way. Nobody had to warn me, nor did they. This was not my first time outside the US, nor my first time in the third world.

The wife took a chance as well, coming to live in a strange country, with nothing but a promise of a better life.
