I voted no - you had time before being given the K1 visa to get to know each other. I realize not everyone has the opportunity to live together before the non USC emigrates to the U.S., but you better be sure you want to marry that person before you come here.

I also think 90 days is enough time to possibly change your mind if you decide to. A year is too long; many people would abuse that.

i voted no........i was looking at it from the immigrants prospective or at least trying to........ can you imagine giving up everything to come to the usa to be with the love of your life staying about a year, building friends, a job, starting to settle in and the usa person says you know what this is not working go home?

I am not going to say a lot of people would abuse it, but the ones that did would plan it out in advance........hmmm how many fiances can i go thru before they stop me sort of thing........

anyways just my opinion

wow, so many "No" this is very interesting, because, is Max of 365 days, no one said, wait until the last day, you can get married the first day he/she come here, but 365 days is just an option.

is Up to 365 days, like now that is up to 90 days!!

No. 90 days should be enough. Have a court wedding first if you feel rushed and then have a grand wedding. The K-1 is NOT a girlfriend visa, or a wife-shopping pass. You and your SO should be absolutely convinced that you are ready and willing to get married to one another. If you're not, why did you get engaged then? IMO, get to know your SO very well BEFORE getting engaged/filing the petition. Not after the visa has been granted. They're plenty of real couples waiting in the wings for years to be reunited -- so don't clog up the visa channels if you're only aiming for a test drive.

For ordinary cases, sure yes you need time to get to know each other... but K1 is so different... the two people who apply for it already know each other and have made up their minds! They also have a long way to go to get the k1, as we see some cases here, the ones who are not ready leave the process and go their own seperate ways! My vote is no.

I'm counting the seconds...

I said yes, because it was the only 'extended time' option - but I think a year is a bit excessive.

As many have mentioned, this isn't a 'getting to know you visa' - it is a fiance(e) visa and should be applied for with that intent.

That said, it's too bad the U.S. does not participate in the holiday worker type visa program that many other countries do (where you can apply for a visa to work in another country for a year or so). It would give couples an opportunity to visit/live with each other. Then again this is a 'nice' type of visa and the U.S. doesn't tend to do 'nice type' visas.

Anyway, while i'm sure the 90 day limit is a concern for many, immigration problems are so huge that i'm sure this isn't even a blip on the radar.

I voted no, although I think a bit more than 90 days would be nice, maybe 120 days.

But a year is too long. I could see some abuse coming from it, like other have said.

Yes and of course that works (and thats what we did) but if you want "that big wedding" it is difficult EVEN if you do hold on to your visa because its not ideal to plan a wedding when people are in separate countries.

I voted "no" because I would not want to see the system bogged down with people who want to use it is a girlfriend (or boyfriend) visa. On the other hand, I think the U.S. should be more permissive about granting tourist visas from more countries. I would have liked the option to bring my fiancee here before filing K1.

05/04/09 -- K1 visa, NOA-1

09/18/09 -- K1, NOA-2

01/26/09 -- Interview passed in Moscow

05/23/10 -- Wedding!

11/16/10 -- 2-year green card approved

04/01/13 -- 10-year green card approved

11/23/13 -- N-400 mailed

I agree. We were lucky in that Lai had a business travel visa, which enabled her to come here to visit before we filed for the K-1.
