I voted no, however I could see it happen but I'd expect it to have very strict rules such as a common law relationship for 2+ years where a ton of evidence would be required such as 4+ shared accounts over the two years etc.

Canada allows it. I can't see the US allowing it anytime soon, though.

I don't mind getting married for this process . . . but I admire the Canadians allowing people to immigrate for "common law" type marriages. I sometimes think that it is more a statememnt of being together when you stay together not because you have to but because it is your choice to stay.

In order for Sean to be on my insurance or get any benefits he has to be married to me, but not so in Canada, correct?

Correct. Same goes for same-sex partners. Plus Canadians don't have to wait for some annual window to open or life-changing event to occur in order to add someone to their benefits and/or insurance. The policy holder runs the show..... not the insurer.

I voted no because of the straight couples that would use it to their disadvantage. And you know they would....!

So if I have read you right.... and extending that reasoning..... family-based visas are subject to the same type of abuse..... vis a vis, to gain illegal entry to the US. Should they no longer be allowed, then?

(Not being argumentative here.)

The basic problem is who would be responsible to support the person that came on the visa ? Would you be willing to be financially responsible for someone with no marriage ? If the visa gave you a year to "get to know yeah other" would you be willing to place a bond for a years worse of poverty level income to assure that the recipient wouldn't be a public charge ?

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
