Good morning

I have a question about applying for a SSN as a K1 visa holder I understand you are eligible but what do you put under citizenship on the application?Other? or Alien not allowed to work as it asks you to get some form of letter from the US government do I just bring in the supplement letter that I printed off the VJ forum explaining K1 visa holders qualify for a SSN?!....Can someone please help me with this

remember to take you Passport with you.

mark "Legal Alien allowed to work "

Also if you are married already "don't tell them that and come back later to change to your married name after you

recieve you EAD (Employment authorization Document)

with your AOS you should also do the AP (advance parol) and EAD ( Employment authorization Document)

SO now use your Philippine last name and your Passport has all the Document attached to it they will need.

OH you can't get one if you dont have at least 30 days left before your 90 days is up on you K-1 visa.

Hope this helps

i am agree with rosie and david, you have to put legal alien allowd to work, are you allowed to work? do you have the stamp in ur passport? if not then you can not get SSN before getting EAD.or green card.

hmm i got my SSN about 2 weeks after i arrived here ( well at least applied for it) its in maiden name, i tried to have it changed to my married name after i got married but because my K1 visa was expiring within 14 days i wasnt allowed to, so now i have to wait until i get my GC to change it.

unless you came through JFK or got a stamp in your passport you are not allowed to work if your a fiance, even if you did get a stamp that permission to work will expire at the 90 days cut off.

i hope this kinda helps

Incorrect...you can get the SS card approx 2 weeks after arrival if they say you can't speak to a supervisor until you get one, have them manually verify your info with DHS if they give you the old "your not in the system yet" but make sure you wait at least 2 weeks after arrival.

Yes take the page you printed from VJ about the SS card and K1.

And just for info EVEN IF YOU HAVE and temp stamp to work in the passport YOU CANNOT WORK, it is outdated information that was confirmed and changed in April '09.

EDIT: Just FYI, they told my wife she couldn't get one, he went to print something to show us WHY! When he came back with the papers I whipped out the document from the VJ site and he said let me try to enter it and WOW it went through no problems.

Good Luck

Wrong

K-1s are NOT allowed to work and it matters not that silly stamp some POEs give you. The K-1 is eligible for an SSN immediately. You can check allowed to work or not allowed to wrk, not important for a K-1. You do nopt need an EAD. You MUST apply more than 14 days before your I-94 expires. If you do not you WILL have to wait for the green card or EAD.

Apply ONLY in the name as it appears in your passport. It does not matter if you say you will be married, change your name or otherwise. It is not necessary to mention this. Change the name on the card after you get your gren card, IF you want, you do not have to.

DO NOT leave until your SSN application is processed. See a supervisor if you must. You ARE entitled to an SSN. An SSN is NOT an authorization to work, for anyone, not even a USC. But it comes in handy for bank accounts, insurance policies etc. My wife had her SSN before her bags were unpacked. You can call the SS office the day after you apply an get your number. The card will arrive in 10 days or less. My wife had her card in hand 6 days after she got off the plane.

FYI the SAVE system that records legal entries into the USA updates every night at 12:01 am. It is not necessary to wait two weeks. My wife had her CARD in hand 8 days BEFORE she had been two weeks. You can apply the morning of the day after you arrive, we did.

VJ is very conservative in their guides, and is allowing for computer glitches and failures in reporting which is very rare. MUCH more common is the DUFUS clerk that doesn't have a clue what they are doing and tells you wrong information instead of asking a supervisor. Being untrained is not their fault, making upo laws they know nothing about IS their fault. This is where they cross the line from "untrained" to "inexcusably STUPID" and "Best reason NOT to have government healthcare"

Actually, you can apply for a SSN and change your name at once. I did it without problems about three weeks ago.

What they did was - they entered my maiden name into the system (one from my passport) and right away changed it to the one I took after the wedding. That is how I got my first-ever SSN number issued. I never had to apply for a card in my maiden name and then change it.

You don't have to wait for your green card or anything else to change your name to your married name. It's all really easy and simple.

I wonder why my SSN havent arrived yet. I have applied with my married name on it and they said that it will take 8 weeks for me to receive my SSN. I have called them again this week to follow up my number and they say that since im under K1 it will take another 8 weeks. Is this normal?

Thanks!
