I have not even thought about driving in the USA as my sweetheart always does such a good job ferrying me about ;)

But I guess I need to start that ball rolling while i count the days before I board the plane to the land of the free....

As I am heading to Indiana, I have just emailed the BMV there with my " I'm a brit with 20+ years driving experience " ploy

and see what they have to say. I honestly don't know if I have it in me to drive like a granny as I have done some amateur rally driving and racing hill climb cars in my younger years. I'm likely to end up scaring the bejesus out of the tester if he ticks me off :)

I am hoping its just a written test and a new photo and away I go..... watch this space :P

Personally I found the California one very easy compared to the UK. It was only 10 minutes driving and that was that.

I got a temporary licence on the back of my UK licence while I waited for a test. The only problem is now that I have passed, I can't get a California driving licence until my EAD arrives, and until then i'm not allowed on the road!

Wait, if he already has a license from overseas why does he have to re-take the test? Won't they let him just transfer it over?

Im From Denmark and had to retake mine, most states dont alow overseas licenses to drive on the roads so the make you take it again.

This happen in Virginia

Man, now I'm not looking forward to getting my license in California.

I think they drive like maniacs down there. No one uses turn signals!

I constantly pester my fiance to use his turn signals.

I also had to go through a 3 tier license here in Canada, so... it's weird to me.

I contacted the DMV here in California and they told me that they just transfer Canadian drivers licenses... you have to take the written test, but not the driving test. Can anybody confirm this? I do NOT need the stress of taking another driving test after jumping through all of the graduated licensing hoops.

Does anyone know what will happen if you are not ready to take the driving test part before your CA temp license expires? Do you have to take the written test again and pay the full fee to get a licence or can you just pay a smaller fee to extend the license?

I wish they would fail more people in NYC. Here, they give a license to everybody who applies (and pays). Too many horrible clueless drivers on the roads.

Normally not. I don't know about specific CA differences but the general rule of thumb is so long as any expired permit/license is less that two years out of date, no rules test is needed for renewal. It's only if you let the license/permit lapse for over two years that the tests must be taken again.

Again, possibly CA differences for this but that's the norm.

Yeah, I know CA is one of the only (the only?) states that require out-of-country drivers to take a driving test. I read on a Canada ex-pat website that for Canadians, they just give you a written test since lots of snowbirds spend summers down here, so I gave the DMV a call and they confirmed this info. However, I just don't trust what gov't customer service reps tell me!!

I had to take the written and the road test. this was about3 years ago.. I don't think the rules have changed though

the road test for me was super simple.. she basically just took me around the block.. it was maybe about 5 minutes or so...

just fund this on the CA DMV site..

If you have a license from another country, you will be required to take a driving test.

Does this mean you can't drive a car if you don't have an US license? Can you just drive with your foreign one until you switch to an US?

In CO you can't be tested or having a license if you don't have a proof you applied for adjustment. My wife has been driving around the last 3 months with her foreign license.
