I would rather see critical thinking taught in schools. Outside of school Children and adults can address their spirituality in whichever fashion suits them best.

The problem with teaching critical thinking is that the teachers have to understand it.

Why oh freaking why do people constantly bash teachers on VJ? I am so freaking tired of it. It is possible for teachers to be intelligent, highly educated, good at their jobs, and successful in the classroom. Sometimes I get the feeling that people on here think ALL teachers are dumbazzes.

As I said, we are lucky that the south didn't win the civil war.

We prefer the term "the War of Northern Aggression"

We find it is Jesus who will have us drink from the fountains of living waters throughout time.

Jesus said, "What man of you having a hundred sheep, if has lost one of them does not leave

the ninety-nine and go after the one which he has lost until he finds it. When he has found it

he lays it on his shoulder rejoicing. And when he comes home he calls his friends and neighbors,

saying to them, 'Rejoice with me for I have found my sheep which was lost ' I tell you there will

be more joy in Heaven over the recovery of one who was lost than over ninety-nine righteous

persons who need no redemption."

You're right -- there are some very smart and capable teachers available. In fact, I know a few (although they eventually quit teaching due to all the restrictions placed upon them by school administrations).

I suppose my lack of faith in teachers stems from the fact they very few people want to teach nowadays. The pay is lousy, you have to deal with children or teenagers, there's virtually no respect given, limitless administrative #######, and tons of restrictions resulting in little-to-no control over the classroom.

Jen there are tons of really awesome teachers, but we only ever hear about the horrible ones

I know. But it's annoying as hell to hear constant bashing. Did no one on this site ever have a good education experience?

Well, at the risk of sounding egotistical, I'm one of the good ones. I tried teaching college and it wasn't for me, so I stepped down to teaching high school. It's so frustrating to me that people have such a bad view of teachers because therein continues the cycle of no respect. Not all schools are like what you described, either and not all teenagers are bad. In 8 years at my current school, teaching 100-150 students a year (high school) I'd say I've had roughly 15 who were just absolutely awful. The rest...they're just kids and once you learn how to connect with them and challenge them to succeed, they will exceed your expectations.

Actually, what I would like to see taught is a proper appreciation of ethics. It is quite possible to teach an ethical structure that precludes reference to any god that allows humans to interact respectfully and responsibly. That way, the 'my god says this, your god says that' could be bypassed for those occasions when one's gods are not the same.

We can avoid this problem if we succeed in converting everyone to Christianity.

Jesus is the way.

Teaching ethics opens up a whole new can of worms. What's considered ethical here may not be considered ethical somewhere else. It's hard to make students understand that when they're too busy texting each other during class.

No, ethical standards are not really fluid in this way. They do not depend on personal opinion.

I don't mean personal opinion. Each culture has a different set of values, social norms and ethics. Whether or not we think another culture is justified in doing whatever it does is irrelevant. We have no more control over them than they do over us. Teaching children that there's one set of ethics is just as damaging as teaching there's one religion.

I don't think young children have the capacity to learn about ethics either. You can teach them simple rights and wrongs, but going into actually teaching ethics would be over their heads. Once they're old enough to know about and be aware of the world, not just the world around them, then you can start to teach ethics. I think values and norms differ from culture to culture, but also person to person.

No, young children do not have the capacity to evaluate and encompass a complete ethical system, no more than they have the ability to accept the full responsibilities and consequences of accepting a religious belief system. I wasn't however thinking that young children should be the target for my ethics classes :). I do agree that a simple system of teaching 'acceptable' and 'unacceptable' behaviour and decision making is quite possible.

Oh, and looking forward to hearing about your paper ideas
