Weirdly enough, 'er indoors broached this very subject last night. She rather sheepishly asked me if I would object if she didn't take my last name (so the kids keep the name they have, and she doesn't have to go through the aggro of changing her name on everything). I laughed, and said I couldn't care less.

She seemed relieved.

"'er indoors"?

I think it's weird for a man to take his wife's last name (IMO).

I agree.

We've toyed with that idea as well for a couple of reasons. I have a rare last name, my husbands is common. He also really likes my mother's maiden name - go figure! However, we're probably not going to do it solely because of the sheer hassle of the paperwork, documents, etc. After all the paperwork involved with our VJ - I think we're going to avoid anything unnecessary for the sake of our sanity!

Just found this so I'm bumping it again.

I know a couple who have a hyphenated last name (hers-his) and their kids also share that name. I wonder what will happen when the kids get married....

I say to each his own. I took my husband's because I like the name, but I have retained my name for use at work. My kids have a different last name anyway, so it doesn't matter much about that.

Some people will think it's not right, but then those people probably don't understand why you're marrying a 'furriner.'

I would not consider changing my last name to my wifes. I hate my last name and it caused me an immense amount of grief through high school, but it is part of me, it is my history. As such, I told my wife that I would understand if she didn't want to change her name and fully support her in it.

I am completely opposed to hyphenated names. They kill tress. Longer names = more print in newspapers = more trees felled . They also guarantee that your children will never play professional sports

As a man, I'm expected to pass on the family name. I would never let it die just because my wife decided to be different. IMO... a man who takes his wife's last name needs to have his balls reattached.

IMO your opinion svcks.

I didn't take my husband's last name and he won't take mine either. And as for others, whatever they choose. I won't go labeling people.

I have a friend whose married name is going to be her mother's maiden name, because it's rare and sounds pretty. Her husband is also taking the same name. I think that it's really nice that he's so understanding and cooperative to her wishes, and I don't think that it has anything to do with his balls or lack thereof.

I personally don't want my fiance to take my last name when we get married because he's Japanese and it would sound really silly with his first name. I like his last name, but I'm not going to change mine at first. I'll probably change it later.

Hyphenated last names are not for me.
