Is it normal in the latina culture to call their partner, fat, stupid, gringo?? I'm feeling a little uneasy with all the name calling? Maybe, it's nothing and they're only terms of endearment, but Im just not used to all of it.....maybe, Im a way to sensitive american type.

thanks,

Troy & Anita

I would be concerned also, I doubt its a cultural thing but even if it was she still needs too take your culture into consideration and being called stupid and fat doesn't fly here.

i have been involved with a couple of latina women and knew their families very well..not cultural

and the name calling equals that you married an azzhole, plain and simple

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

You should probably know how she means it by her tone...and always communication is key. If you tell her you don't like something, then she should respect your feelings. Have you asked her about it?

That being said, my husband routinely calls me "guiri, or his guiri" which is the Spanish equivalent of gringo. It means basically "person from northern europe/america who doesn't speak Spanish and is usually sunburnt." :-P. So I was a guiri when I met him (I wouldn't assign myself to that category anymore) and it's an affectionate term. I also have a friend from Venezuela, and her husband (also from Venezuela) calls her his "gordita" since she's gained weight after coming here. She doesn't really like it but it isn't meant harshly.

"Hey, gordo" is a lot different from "mi gordito," "tonto" doesn't necesarily translate to stupid...it can also mean silly, and gringo, well, I explained that above. And, if she's calling you fat and stupid in English, it may be that she doesn't really understand what those words mean in English. Much like cursing in another language, you always have to be careful teasing/joking/being sarcastic - you aren't always saying what you think you're saying.

People often talk about "speaking a different language." In our case, it's literally true - and just knowing the words isn't enough. The cultural differences and nuances still bite my husband and me sometimes, and we've been talking every day for over 4 years.

Communicate, communicate, communicate. And then clarify :).

Erm, I think Troy IS a man...

Also, when he starts calling me "guiri," I call him "mi viejo/viejito" which means old since he's 7 years older than I am.

Bottom line, you should never pick on someone you love for something they REALLY feel sensitive about.

If I used terms like that with Umit....

I would not be with Umit for much longer, she would dump my sorry behind....

Even in Jest you shouldn't say things like that to your "love".

Shows underlying issues that may bubble up later, proceed with caution.

If it hurts your feelings, then it is abusive, no matter how it is meant when she says it. Lay down the law and tell her that her calling you these words is not acceptable.
