Deserves some kind of punishment... foreign leaders anywhere should not have to endure such embarrassing events but 3 years is a bit too much. Certainly he was being made an example of by this 'newer' criminal justice system over there. Of course, a proper context of whom this foreign leader is/was and what circumstances led to this kind of behavior are in line as well.

Does anyone have knowledge of what could happen to him for things like good behavior and the like? I suspect with time this individual will go from national celebrity to well-respected figure for 'throwing the shoe at a dog.'

I can't imagine those jails are "pleasant" by jail standards.

Still not sure exactly why he did it - I read that he was a former Baathist. I think it would have been more of a symbolic gesture if an ordinary guy on the street did it - even so though, there seems to be plenty of public support for this guy and condemnation at the ruling.
