I really want to get a motorcycle, but my spouse is currently against it. Her reasoning is that if something happens who will be a father to our kids. Obviously she is frightened that I will get hurt and that she cares for what happens to me, and I respect that. But this has been a childhood dream of mine. I have the time right now to take safety courses and get myself a starter bike. I do not want to do this without the support of my wife. Has anyone here run into a similar situation?

Motorcycle riders aren't called organ donors for nothing. My wife would probably buy me a motorcycle to collect on the life insurance later. :jest:

But this has been a childhood dream of mine. I have the time right now to take safety courses and get myself a starter bike.

Give it a try if it's that big a deal to you take the safety course. You may get it out of system sell the bike later.

Ask your wife to take the initial safety course with you. I am sure that once she meets someone who is a competent rider her concerns may subside a little. Make an agreement that initially you'll only ride on weekends, during day-light hours and only in light traffic. Seems silly, but helping her to subside some of her fears may help you in getting a bike.

Yes, I have run into this. I had always wanted to have a motorcycle since age 16, it was a dream. My parents would never even think of this. After I was married, any discussion of this was met with disgust and dissapproval. I had always thought it was because of the safety aspect, amd maybe it did have something to do with it when our children were small. But this kept eating at me. The dream did not die, it only got stronger. I let her disapproval keep me from fulfilling this dream until our children were either on their own or in college. I then started to talk about it more frequently and louder, so to speak. Her diaspproval did not waiver! I finally had to just ignore her and decide that if I wanted to fulfill this dream, I must do what I need to do and if that results in divorce, then so be it. There is no logical reason why a 50 year old guy, that has placed the dream on the back burner for 34 years, should have to do it any more. I took the Riders Safety Course and got my motorcycle license. When to Myrtle Beach Bike Week and rode the Harley Davididson Demos almost every bike the had and decided which one I wanted. Within 6 months after I returned from Myrtle Beach I purchased and 2002 H-D Road King Classic! I tried to get my wife to ride with me. She did once in our neighborhood at no faster than 20 mph. But not long after I learned from her own words that "only scuzzy bastards ride motorcycles". This is what she has always thought. I asked her if she did not realize that she was talking about me? No answer. We separated in 2003 and divorce was final in 2005. I am now married to a wonderful, beautiful, Russian woman that loves to ride on the motorcycle with me and we go to Bike Week every year together to be with the other "scuzzy bastards"!

The think that your wife really needs to think about is does she want a husband that is happy while he is alive, or a husband that is building resentment and miserable but around perhaps a longer time. There are many things that can kill you other than a motorcycle. I have ebeen riding now for 8 years and I am still alive and VERY HAPPY!

P.S. After I bought my motorcycle and i loved the feeling I get while i am riding. It is amazing! I regret, that I did not get it much sooner!

Good Luck!

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
