Joe the Plumber was not hauled over any coals". He allowed himself to be used as a political stooge by the McCain campaign - a campaign that he later admitted made him "feel dirty".

Whether taxes are paid or unpaid is a BS issue IMO - unless evidence emerges that there was a deliberate (criminal) attempt to defraud or evade paying.

In that regard if we're looking for examples - Wesley Snipes would be a more fitting one than Joe the Plumber. Snipes actually didn't file income tax returns and was deemed criminally liable.

There are areas of the tax code that are much less than clear about what is deducible and what isn't. You'd figure that the IRS would have some kind of mechanism to detect flaws in filings from members of the government.

They have ways of learning that you purchased out of state by somehow getting hold of your credit card statements, don't ask me how.

Also purchased a used car for parts, way below book value, took what I needed off of it and hauled it to the wrecking yard, state IRS questioned me on the sales tax I paid on that wreck because it was way below book value, had to send in the BOS. Suckers are watching you on every step. No, I wasn't born paranoid, but made that way, USCIS didn't help either.

They watch your every freakin step. I'm surprised so many pay with credit (i get the ease of it, and b.s. points or miles), however their every move is tracked like a mouse through a maze!

Every since the gov't subpeoned google/gmail for their records, they have a "master map" for every person. If you use gmail, they have your contacts, all your emails scanned for gov't access. No secrets anywhere.

With the cameras, phones, credit, they know what you are doing every second. Gooo patriot act!

About the taxes, they are an individuals responsibility, if your ignorant and say "i didnt do it, its the accountants fault" your stupid and should pay the fees. Those demmies didnt make an error, they knew darn well what they did was wrong.

i agree that the tax laws and tax codes are often difficult to decipher especially if you don't have a straight-forward return. i, too, have had complicated returns, having worked months at a time in other countries and having worked as a consultant/contractor for both domestic & international agencies. however, i have always filed. and any time i have made a mistake, the IRS has informed me within a few months of how much i owed... down to the nearest red cent.

there is no excuse for a $128,000 mistake for someone who works in government. i find it very disheartening.

The reason I posted this was because these same issues came up with Zoe Baird and at least another nominee in the Clinton administration cabinet. You would think if these people want high profile government jobs that have to be vetted in congress, they wouldn't get into these situations. And if they can't run their own private affairs competently, should they be trusted to run the people's business?

I just couldn't help but notice that these issues seem to have followed the filling of cabinet posts in the last two Dim administrations.

Does anyone here know the tax laws regarding the use of a company car? For example, if the company you work for, provided you with a car, are you required to report that as extra income?
