WASHINGTON (AP) - Massive deficits could force the post office to cut out one day of mail delivery, the postmaster general told Congress on Wednesday, in asking lawmakers to lift the requirement that the agency deliver mail six days a week.

If the change happens, that doesn't necessarily mean an end to Saturday mail delivery. Previous post office studies have looked at the possibility of skipping some other day when mail flow is light, such as Tuesday.

Many of us have heard the postal carriers' motto in one form or another. One popular version is "Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail shall keep the postmen from their appointed rounds".

: : : The original saying was actually "Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these courageous couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" and was said about 2500 years ago by the Greek historian, Herodotus. He said this adage during the war between the Greeks and Persians about 500 B.C. in reference to the Persian mounted postal couriers whom he observed and held in high esteem.

Emmett Fitz-Hume: I'm sorry I'm late, I had to attend the reading of a will. I had to stay till the very end, and I found out I received nothing... broke my arm.

Switching to a 5 day-a-week schedule would save a lot of fuel.

Postal delivery people drive those little buggy carts, I can't imagine they consume a lot of fuel. And they park in one place and then walk around for blocks. Heck, if they go to a 5-day schedule the postal workers might get fat!

Not in my town, they just drive mostly from mail box to mail box. I have only noticed walkers in certain areas, in Tampa.

Here, it's normal for them to skip a few days of delivery. The postal service is just terrible!

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Ha, was at our post office yesterday, place was deserted, but had to send off a small package. Girl asked me if I need stamps, no thanks, still have plenty. With direct deposits, online bill paying, do very little mailing anymore.

Use to stop at the post office every night to over night prints, e-mail those now, and instead of hopping on an airplane, switch on the webcam for a video conference, all that is history and wondered why those guys on the top floor of the WTC were communing 40 miles just to sit in front of a PC. Ha, even wonder why my kids have to go to school to sit in front of a PC, what a waste of fuel and always a huge traffic jam.

Today, go out to the mailbox just to receive junk mail, practically as bad as spam, fill up a shopping bag or more each week for recycling, feel that junk mail is the only thing keeping the post office busy.
