If you think about it, and use your common sense, everyone on VJ who has been here or has gone thru the process already, is already a mentor to the rest of VJ who is still seeking help and advice.
Especially the members who can't spell, can't capitalize properly while typing, can't use remotely literate or even understandable English, and give wildly inaccurate advice. Si, man. :(

The buddy/mentor concept sounds promising, but I believe that it would be a nightmare to administer and to police, or even monitor. If wrong advice were given and then followed, with deleterious results, what about liability? Also, how would the "success" of the program be measured? Finally, it has already been mentioned that posting and participation are voluntary.

I believe that Ling Ling's original idea has merit, and that it should be considered. May I ask that the discussion here include a return to that original topic?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I should clarify.... The buddy idea was not for immigration issues at all. It was for "making new local friends" and a way to talk to local people that may have "local geographic and social" information on helping fellow new immigrants settle in. Immigration discussion is as always best on the forums.

I agree with Ling Ling, who is always very intuitive, that a careers forum for newcomers would be a wonderful asset. The US can be a jungle without paths when it comes to offering insight to people from overseas who want to land on both feet as soon as possible. Here, especially, the mentoring concept could work.

Nothing wrong with being a fan of Capt. Ewok, but I think you'd agree with him even if he suggested soup sandwiches.

I know for a fact that new immigrants have trouble finding new work when they arrive do to bias and lack of US work history. If there is anything I can do to help (forum or not) I would be open to it.

No, Doctor 'Who', I'm just speaking for the consensus in this thread who seem to feel that monster.com already exists.

Have a look again...you'll see that there are some in this thread that realize monster.com is not the end-all-be-all of finding employment.

Some in this thread realize that if that were the case, there'd be zero unemployment "Just login to Monster, and Bob's your uncle".

Some in this thread realize that the employment obstacles and challenges for immigrants are unique.

Perhaps YOUR experience is different because the UK is an English speaking country. Whatever the reason, your experience is unique to you,

and I in no way desire to trivialize it by suggesting otherwise.

I don't even know why I'm having this dialogue with you. I'm sure entered this thread, to add your personal views on why it's a good or bad idea,

but you somehow became distracted and decided to quip in with a snipe. But maybe I just missed where you contributed anything to this discussion?

Do I have to be 'in' the conversation from the beginning to not have an opinion? I've been reading this pretty much since you started it looks to me like most readers in the thread think it'd be an unnecessary forum. Especially since we already HAVE a forum for it.

And just so ya know, LL, immigrating is immigrating. Speaking English as a first language is a VERY marginal advantage. My husband works as a Customer Service Rep for a major cable company. A lot of people are charmed by his accent - others hang up on him or ask to speak to someone who 'speaks English'.

And I sniped at you because I think your member title is over-the-top. I don't know what you are trying to imply with it, but it makes you look silly.

Posted (edited)

:ot2: Personally I feel a forum dedicated to starting work / career again in the US would be useful. One of the things I would be 'wary' (for lack of a better word) would being 'buddied' up with someone who feels they know more than they do. I appreciate how in the current forums if someone spouts off (cause they know  ) others are able to see what is going on and help correct the mis information.

We all learn differently and obviously interact differently, so whilst this idea might not suit some it may be ideal for others.

Sounds like a personal problem that nobody can help but yourself. Perhaps you should take advice from your own member title and "get over it".

Thanks for sharing.
