Recession or Depression

With the stock market plunging daily, unemployment rising and a general malaise on the population I was wondering what you have notice in your area that is a result of this economic crisis.

I'm in Northern California and we of course have seen a huge slump in home building and home sales with the related industries also suffering. The downturn is really impacting the retail stores with sales of merchandise at unseen lows. This summer our tourist industry suffered due to the huge forest fires. But, with an early snow in the mountain at the first of November, some ski resorts have already opened.

Mostly what I see is people holding onto their money and not sure whether to buy things for fear they won't have money later. At least gas prices have come down. Someone told me they bought regular gas for less that $2 a gallon.

I know that times are getting tough when the number of spam email is down and not hardly any virus attacks are being sent.

What's is like in your part of the country? Any good news is appreciated.

I purchased gas for $1.70 the other day.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

My husband's boss was in Maui a couple of weeks ago on a work trip (yeah nice hunh). We've been hearing in the news that tourism is down nearly 20% in the newspapers. But the hotel manager at the property in Maui was saying that they're being hush hush on the true numbers and that hotel rooms in the past 3 months have been 60% empty. And flights have been down nearly 40%. Of course they're expecting an upswing for Christmas.

Mind you the % is not comparing to the preceding months, that's in comparison to the figures of the previous year for the same months.

Quite a few businesses along the ocean front here are boarded up with lease signs in the windows. I guess the cruise ship passengers in Hilo have been buying far less in the past year. Makes sense. If you paid for a trip you can barely afford, you still go on the trip but don't spend nearly as much when you're at port.

Housing prices are dropping dramatically here in the past year. So has rent. Lots of options to rent or buy right now. So many homes and foreclosures on the market.

Gas just dropped below the $3 mark a few days ago. Its $2.98/gallon. On the West side of the island at Costco its $2.48/gallon. (L) Costco.

Lots of people without work. Tons more home invasions these days than in recent years, concentrated in 'nice' towns that happen to be unfortunate enough to be adjacent to 'poor' towns. Lots of cars being broken into as well.

Last weekend, I was going home through the main shopping areas of downtown here in the city. The sidewalks were PACKED and I saw plenty of shopping bags in people's hands.....and they weren't bags from Walmart, Target or any of their competitors. I was kind of surprised, considering the economy and the official start to the Christmas season hasn't yet begun.

Our neighbor on the door to the side of us at our apartment was robbed last night. Thankfully she wasnt home. I grew up around here for the past 11 1/2 yrs. Crime has been way up in the last 3 yrs. I dont think its 100% to blame on the economy. Its about greed these days. People wanting more and more and dont care who they steal from or who they hurt. Im a manager at walmart and I can tell you that every day someone is stealing. One Friday night alone up to 13 different people thru out the night were caught stealing... and most of them said when caught and found out they were headed to jail that they had the money to pay for all that ####### and they dont know why they stole.... BS BS BS.

Yeah I'm a regular reader of our police blotter... it got really bad over this summer and is still bad. One neighborhood near me, 5 home invasions over the same weekend. In 2 cases residents were tied and gagged and left in the bathrooms or basement while the 'guests' looked for bling.

I haven't seen a huge impact here in Denver. There's talks of people being laid off and businesses saying their sales have gone down a bit but the recession hasn't hit us... YET.

Oh, gas was at $1.85/gl for regular unleaded. That's over $2.00 less than what it was this past summer.

AJ if you need a gun for home security, hubby has extras for you and the wife.

Seriously though, that's scary. I had my car broken into and for months I was really angry about it. I cannot even imagine if it was my home. Let alone, being there when it happened.
