Are you having a hard time looking for a job?

I just went to one major retail company for an interview. The only thing they offered me was minimum wage with small hours. I keep applying for many places, but nothing good so far. I have a BA and speak two languages. But, you know, the economy is so bad. I will have another interview on Monday, but I am not expecting anything so good.

Please share your experience. I am applying for a even regular cashier or sales positions. Nothing fancy.

Your first job will most likely be "beneath" you... It is important however to establish a US work history... You may need to "suck it up" for a few months in order to establish yourself

I have lived in the USA for 6 years and have a solid work history in the USA too - it was on campus but it's still a job and I developed new skills. Anyway, when I graduated last year I had to take to take a job beneath my skills too. I think it is the economy, I have the skills and experience but the competition is so hard right now. Just keep working and developing skills, a lot companies hire within. You might get promoted if you make them aware you would like a higher position or remember it's easier to get a new job when you already have one so don't give up. I have finally gotten a new job and will be working in my field and earning a suitable wage in the new year. I'm just waiting for my EAD. Yeah me!!!!

Even if the economy was in better condition, this is a tough time of the year to get a regular job. Most places, especially retail, are hiring for holiday help only and just for a few hours so that they don't have to offer any benefits. If you're offered a job, take it and keep looking for something else in your free time. You may find you like the job and they like you and after the holidays are over, they may offer you more hours or a higher position when one becomes available.

And dependant on the level of "beneath me" maybe quite a bit of time particularly for those who possess a specialized degree.. My wife who has a Pharmacist degree may find it impossible to ever work as a fully licensed pharmacist without a significant amount of "retraining" to satisfy the "Western" standard.

I can't get a job in my field yet either, as all foreign veterinarians have to take the US licensing exams. Shame they cost over $7000 to do...I guess the good news is that I should find it fairly easy to get a job once I am done, as it is not a hard field to find jobs in and I have further qualifications in my specialty. I confess that if I couldn't be a veterinarian here ever, I wouldn't have been willing to come to the US I love my husband, but it's important to me to have a career too.

I applied for Disneyland and I was asked to come back for an interview on Monday.

Nothing else. I applied for several other companies, but no nothing.

So I will try get a job there. I do not really care how much I can get paid or how many hours.

To be honest, I was asked to go to the final interview for one major retail department store.

But, in this economy, it is almost impossible to sell and open credit cards.

What do you really want to do? Where would you really like to work? I find it helps more if you have a goal and know the general direction you want to head towards.. rather than just applying to random jobs here and there.

My wife had(s) her own business in Japan for 15 years doing acupuncture and physical therapy. We check about her working in the U.S. in that field. To satisfy the western governing body of health, she has to go back to school in the U.S. for 2 years and take a test again. What is funny to both of us is that Acupuncture is not a standard western thing it came from the east... SO... she has to go to school agan... and learn the western way... ha ha ha.... and it will cost us $$$$.$$

I'm very thankful for having a really good job, just graduated college and I feel so blessed to have a job that looks like I'm way farther in my career. My husband just got a new job also with a well known company and is doing great.

We both move to Atlanta with NO JOBS and lived in a tiny 1 br apt for a couple months. Thankfully we found jobs right away. BUT we were willing to work at a starbucks if we had to. We were not thinking about sitting around trying to find the perfect job making tons of money. And i think there are some people out there saying they cant find a job.. but believe me there are jobs out there it might just not be what you are looking for at the moment.

In my opinion if you need money and are in the "search for a job" i think you just take whatever you find and keep looking WHILE you are working the not so well paying job.

but again, that's just what i think.

For a person with no prior work experience in the U.S., the Wal-Marts of this country will usually hire you at a low wage and give you a chance to prove yourself. Don't expect fulltime work, however, or any fringe benefits. At least you can be developing a work record and create some work relationships that will help you learn of other job opportunities. Only the Wal-Mart type of retailer is still doing OK in this terrible economy, which will only get worse as Christmas approaches.

My husband has had to take a job that is "beneath him". He was frustrated at first about the pay and the fact that it was a 6 month contract with no benefits. We are looking on the bright side though because the company that hired him started a hiring freeze the week after he was hired. He is a professional and has experience but to get into his field here I think he will need to take a course or two at the college in town. The rough part is that he had a great interview for a great position. The people loved him but someone with experience in the area got the job over him. On a positive note we like the town he got a job in heaps and can't wait to get on with our life. At least we are here and at least he has a job. I am the US citizen but he has the better degree and better resume but at this point it will be my responsibility to get a job with health benefits. I think this is just a tough time in general to be looking for work. Good luck to everyone and stay strong.

Try anything before trying wal-mart. I worked there as a teenager and it was the worst job I have ever had! Have you thought about interning at the company you want to work for? No pay, but it's a huge foot in the door. I'm graduating from an ivy league this semester and I'm having trouble finding a job in my field!

I haven't filed for any but I am looking. Although a lawyer in the Philippines with 12 years experience, I know I need to go to school and get an internship to be able to compete. For now, I am focused in developing my household skills and getting over my senyorita complex, hahaha!
