Online Games?

I've been doing some reading on the site and I'm wondering... When we first gor together and I told someone we met playing an online game, they'd look at me like I'd suddenly changed colors and sprouted wings. Then of course there's the hushed voice and glancing around as they ask.. "But how do you know he's not a psycho or something??"

That was nearly 7 years ago, and every now and then we run across someone who's can't believe it. Anyway, I was wondering.. How many of us are out there? Which game did you meet in? How are things now?

I'll start. My honey and I met in EverQuest in 2002. We've managed several trips back and forth over the years and the being apart is one of the worst things I've had to experience. His interview is coming up toward the end of October and we hope to be married sometime in December. I guess absence does make the heart grow fonder!

Also, for those of us with interviews coming up.. Any and all suggestions, tips or well wishes are greatly appreciated :)

Haha I know what you're talking about, people still give me the same reaction when I tell them we met playing an online game... (we initially met playing Ragnarok) and I usually tell them "how do you know that a person that you meet in a party is not a psycho or something?" Meeting someone in a "usual" (at least what people still consider usual, but I think that's changing) is no guarantee either. It's not about meeting the person online or not, it's about talking, getting to know each other, spending time together (even online)... that's how you know someone. I would guess there's a lot of people here in VJ that have met playing an online game as well.

Edit: We went from Ragnarok to WoW... Wow is nice and stuff but I still think it's overrated.

We met in Anarchy Online back in 2003. Gaming with hubby and the support we got from the friends we play with (from all over the world) kept me sane through our lengthy immigration journey. Since then, we've played World of Warcraft, Dungeons and Dragons Online, and Age of Conan. We now sit side-by-side at our computers, still playing (and I can whack him upside the head when he's slow on the heals) :bonk:

I find that a lot of people don't know what the deal is with MMOs and I get a lot of "Anarchy what?" when they ask how we met. :P

Best of luck with your interview!

Now that you're getting married you're going to be pushing each other's buttons on a daily basis in real life.

Things have changed. I don't remember too many chicks playing computer games and the guys were considered geeks.

Actually.. I started on Gemstone back around..1994 I think it was... There's a lot more girl gamers than most people think. We just don't advertise the fact. ;)

As for pushing buttons.. We've been pushing each others buttons for years and loving it :)

Ahhh, Everquest! What crazy memories from that game!

I didn't meet my wife from EQ, but I did meet people and many of them turned out to be great folks! There's definitely a sense of community in these games. :)

A Japanese guild made a music video, Sayonara Norrath, which is really well done! You may want to take a look at it. Great nostalga!

Edit: SRVT, yeah did a few MUDs, too. I was a builder for one for a little while.

You newbs need to go more old school, like MUDs. (played them from 1995 - 2002)

(we also predate "n00b")

Dunno why but I just could never get into EQ or WoW or FFXI.

HA! I did start in MUDs.. I think the first one was L.O.R.D back in its BBS days.. The Gemstone.. very old school text based. I had a friend who bugged me for years to try EQ so I finally did and thats where I met my honey.. no regrets ;)

I was everywhere -- Avatar, Addict, The Gathering, Necromium, Doom.. geeze.

Met some really decent people there. Back before gamers turned into.. whatever it is you'd call them today.

It was so fun, thought-provoking, and creative. I think most of it has been taken away for the grindfests of today. Hence why I found it boring like 10 years. :(

Mohammed and I met, in April 2007, on World of Warcraft. I made a guild and he joined it and was a quite person for a while and that made me wonder about him. I started talking with him, found out he was Egypt, and was unsure of his english, so he never said much in the guild chat.

I myself, couldn't believe, I could have so much fun and get to know someone through a computer like I had. I was taught that bad men prey on young girls and women on the internet. The news channel taught me and my family that. Even till today when anyone hears we met online.. I have to stand and listen to how dangerous he could be and so forth.

I think people forget there are men preying on girls/women 24/7 in the town they live in as well. I always answer, "how do you know that a person that you meet in a party, at work, by a friend/family, is not a psycho or something?" How many women marry these men and later find out they are dangerous? How many live in abuse for years, because they're too scared for their lives to leave them?

I have spent daily online playing WoW and Skype/webcam talking with, Mohammed, since April/07. You just get to know the person and feelings begin, as they do if someone in your life, lived next door to you and you had met. The danger is still there, no matter how you met, as I feel no one ever TRULY knows for sure what another person is capiable of doing. All we do is believe they are a good person and love them, until they prove otherwise.
