Congress, Bush Approve Addiction and Mental Health Parity Legislation

The long-held dream of parity in behavioral healthcare is now a

reality: The U.S. House of Representatives voted 263-171 to approve the Wall Street bailout bill, which includes a provision that mandates parity coverage for addiction and mental-health care, and President George Bush swiftly signed the measure into law.

It sounds great in principle, though us activists are worried that this might drive insurance companies to NOT offer any at all; or employers to simply cut off ALL insurance to avoid paying for this part. I do hope we're mistaken. This is a huge step in the recognition of mental illness as any other disease; and perhaps a mini step in getting rid of the stigma of it.

Wonderful! This should decrease the cost of health care, as those with challenged brains use other health care services at a much higher rate than those who aren't depressed, etc. It will also increase productivity because fewer people won't be losing as many years of their lives to these ravaging diseases.

Here's to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness!

I agree, it is great in principle and hopefully will be great in reality. However, so far, I have had some negative experiences with insurance companies regarding parity diagnoses. I have numerous clients who have parity diagnoses and their insurance companies allow for unlimited mental health coverage for them. However, their co-pays with the parity diagnosis are higher than they would be with a non-parity diagnosis, i.e. $20 vs. $45 per session. When you also are experiencing financial concerns, it can be difficult coming up with the higher co-pay.

I have also seen employers opt for insurance policies that have a clause where, even though a person has a parity diagnosis, they are still only allowed a limited number of sessions per year.
