I'm not sure how I feel about this... I personally know someone on the registry who got put on it by being a 18 year old male who had sex with a 16 year old female. He's now in his late 20's, happily married to a wonderful lady and they have a brand new baby. He's responsible and holds down two good jobs. He's NOT a sex offender, but someone who made a stupid mistake as a teen but the charge of "underage sex offender" makes him out to be a kiddy fiddler.

apparently there are so many in my neighbourhood that its still counting after about a minute. I think its broke.

Not long ago a Canadian guy looked up the offender registry for somewhere in Maine(? IIRC) and then went and murdered 2 of them on the list and then committed suicide. Last I read on it, no one knows why he did it. Neither of his parents know if he'd ever been assaulted by those people.

We have 41 within our zip code. One lives about a quarter of a mile up the road from us.

This is so interesting as my hubby and I were just browsing a similar list for our area yesterday. His main complaint was that there should be more specifics on each case.

Frances, people would have a better understanding of your friend's situation if details of what he was accused of (or at least more than just one the one line... "indecent liberties" is indicated). Was he actually convicted for it?

aha, finally. It didn't like my address for somereason, but a search by zip code shows 30 offenders here in town.

I'm surprised there's not more, considering we have one of the state's largest mental hospitals, and a fairly large prison within city limits.

I know what ya mean Frances, I have seen that situation myself, tho in this case it was a 19 year old boy with a 16 yr old girl, her mom came on to the boy and when he rejected her she brought charges against him, now this kid who had good grades and a bright future is always gonna be labled. On the other hand i do appreciate knowing that there are 61 offenders located near me, the scary part is not knowing the ones who havent registered.

I'd assume he was convicted if he's on the list... but it's not something we ever talked about. I'm very close to his wife's family (they live in the same apartment building we do, and I've known them for 17 years...actually feel like part of the family) and it was mentioned in passing once, very briefly. He explained his past to his then girlfriend and the family and that's all that was important to me was that they were comfortable with knowing what had happened. I'm glad I knew him before I knew of his past...I didn't get the chance to pre-judge him. But then someone in our apartment building found out he was on the registry and told other people in the building....I thought it was awful she wanted to spread this about him...when not knowing the details. Yeah, perhaps more information is needed on the description... :(

The way to find out if you love someone or not, is by talking to them.

The more you talk to them the more you either hate them or love them.

Don't know, don't want to know... They have to live SOMEWHERE! If they've served their time they have a right to be left in peace unless they demonstrate that they need to be locked up again by repeating their behaviour (but no, I don't believe in third chances in this case). What good does it do to try to hound them out of their homes just to be on the safe side?

I had a sex offender in my apartment complex. Of course it was my ex-husband that informed me and was bitching to me about it. Well I was quite upset that the management of my apartment complex didn't notify any of us. The complex is made up of mostly single mothers so I was outraged to find this out. I contacted the complex to find out why we weren't notified. They said they were required to tell us plus this person isn't the tenant on the lease. I contacted the police department which told me the same thing.

Well I wasn't done with this. I saw a blurb on the evening news about sex offenders not allowed to live so many feet from a playground. I was all over that because we have a playground at my complex. He is in very close proximity of a public playground. I contacted the tv station. They were all over this. They came to my work and interviewed me...yikes! I asked for my face not be shown but instead they showed my shadow and didn't disguise my voice. Ugh! Anyways, it was on the nightly news about my complex. The tenants here were outraged. The individual is no longer in the complex but parents are much more cautious about their kids now.

I did the address search too. There are several in the town I live in. In fact, there was a guy about 3 miles from me that was indicted on over 100 charges about six months ago. I thought I lived in a rural, quiet community.

Only 3 left for me.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
