Interesting tidbit, 2 friends (in Ohio) told me today they are voting for McCain. Both voted for Obama in the primary.

They are fed up with the Obama-as-savior spiel & McCain is moderate enough that they are comfortable with him. I was a bit surprised but I do think McCain will win Ohio (& the general).

That's O.K. because me, my 2 Brothers, my Sister-in-law, my Dad and my Step-Mother are Ohio voters and we're all voting for Obama. It's not even going to be close in Ohio.

Are you sure - all 5 votes?

6 > 2 ! :star::star::star:;)

Ohioan voting for Obama. My father, who is a registered Republican is also voting for Obama. Ohio is a swing state - and it has tended to be true that whoever wins Ohio wins the general election. We shall see...

Correction...

2 + 6 = 8

8 > 2

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

"I am pro-life and I believe that marriage should only be between and man and a woman. I am opposed to any expansion of gambling in Alaska." Sarah Paliln, November, 2006

"I am and always have been pro-choice, and that is not a right any of should take for granted. There are a number of forces at work in our society that would try to turn back the clock and undermine a woman’s right to chose, and [we] must remain vigilant. " Hillary Clinton, January 2000

IMO, any HRC supporter who turns to McCain because of Palin wasn't listening to HRC when she spoke.

Not quite, but I do believe that the president of the USA in the 21st century should be very in touch with the ways in which people obtain and use information today, and how information is disseminated much more quickly and through many different mediums than it was 10, 20, and 30+ years ago. Being out of touch with modern technology in this day and age is really being out of touch with the ways in which modern society works. To say governing this country and the ability to understand and use popular modern-day technology are two separate issues is quite off-base, in my opinion.

Jeesz! He said he was computer illiterate. He didn't say he's never heard of a computer!

Oooh, well in THAT case...

Come on.

Yeah, you know it does seem to me that up until 1980 Presidents were required to type 60 words per minute since many of the forms they were signing would be typewritten.

That's probably why Bush Sr didn't get reelected.

There are computer related challenges of this era that probably will be handled poorly by a non-computer savvy president.

1. Cyber-terrorism

2. IP Infringment Aka P2P

3. Identity theft

4. Privacy

5. Net Neutrality

Really? The President needs to personally get on a PC to understand how to deal with these? He can't like, have advisors that understand these things in detail or something?

Does he need to actually understand how hackers manipulate passwords and get through firewalls?

By the way, do you know the Con for Net Neutrality?

A person who spends all their time on a PC and has time to sit down and compare platforms and weigh out whether they prefer a MAC or a PC from a PC users perspective is not likely to have an unbiased opinion of net neutrality. It is about a lot more than that and having the facts presented from both sides- in person, not text messaging, is going to suffice and be of a lot more value.

I don't expect a president to be an expert on any of these issues. But he or she should at least be willing to get familiar with them. Its kind of hard to do that, when he can hardly even use a computer.

McCain's choices in advisers tend to rely heavily on lobbyists or others from the corporate world. His advisors will likely suggest solutions to cyber-terrorism that will involve hiring security company x to handle the governments cyber-security or to buy lots of Cisco equipment. If you don't understand the issue, how can you judge the advice you are receving?

Gee, McCain campaign says you have to be a Vietnam vet pow to understand the security issues...

As always, same rules do not apply to both sides, huh?

Still do not see how a clueless disoriented dude can have a judgement based on his pow experiences.. More like the opposite, with anger and flashbacks.

Good to see you posting again, Gary!

I hope people will like the "kinder, gentler" version. No more massive flame wars for me.

Welcome back, Gary! We've missed you and Luz

I'm gonna steal these from Fark, they're just too good not to pass along:

I (L) Fark

So who does McCain pick? A woman, a first, for running mate.

Didn't Mondale run with Geraldine Ferraro on the Dem ticket? And Nader's VP choice was a woman too, if I remember correctly. Not to mention all those women VPs on various and sundry smaller party tickets.

I realize that, other than the dem ticket in 84 (??) the others are relatively small and unimportant, but she's not the first female VP candidate....

You are missing the point. It is not about WPM or the ability to compare platforms, nor is it any other X, Y or Z specific skill, it is an overarching ability to be an active participant in the use of exponentially growing technology - a HUGE aspect of modern society. We live in a digital world. Could someone who is not in touch with this digital world act as president? Of course. Would they make the best president? Probably not.

Nah, I see your point. I just disagree with it! I see it as irrelevant. People getting on computers and using them in their everyday life is definitely a part of our modern society. But what exactly does that amount to? Mainly checking E-Mails, Going to different websites, downloading youtube videos, perhaps opening up documents and reading them. Beyond that, most people who use a computer don't even know how to use the find and replace function.

So, what skills does one person who knows how to use a google search engine have over someone who has one of their aides do it for them that puts them more in touch with the issues you describe? None. The issues you are talking about are far more complex than your everyday computer user can deal with.

It would be nice if he could use Microsoft Money or Quicken though, just to show what an unbalanced budget looks like in simple terms!

devil's advocate here:

So what if McCain chose a woman for strategic reasons. Did Obama choose Biden to help secure the on-the-fence Dems who feel more comfortable with an older white man? Maybe, maybe not on both counts.

In the case of inexperience (for both Palin and Obama) to those who cite that as a reason. many Germans thought Angela Merckel was a risk because of her inexperience and she has proven to be a great leader for Germany.

There is so much bickering here and a lot of "Hello, Pot, my name is Kettle" too (no surprise ... it's VJ :) ) when there could be civil and interesting debate. (btw, that comment isn't directed at anyone in particular, just the overall bickering)
