That is an awsome idea with the donors.

I work for the Jesuits now and I want them to do this at Christmas time. We usually adopt a family from a local school. I want to add some food boxes this year too. We'll see if I can talk them into it.

Good luck with it!

Every Christmas at Walmart they have this place outside where you can bring toys.. Two Christmas ago me and the hubby bought a few toys to donate to them.. it felt so good to know that some kid who might not have been able to open any gifts on Christmas Day would now be able too...

We were planning on doing it again last year but it didn't work out.. hopefully we can this year...

Thank you. The worst they can do is say NO.

I did it in honour of my son and I was almost crying there in the Walmart as we were picking out the toys...

at Certain stores and restaurants they have these trees around the holiday time with kid's names all over them.. I think you can pick a child and get something specifically for that child, we had wanted to do that but we thought of it too late... maybe this year..

Thanks for posting this link. I've never heard of this. My mom volunteers at the food bank, and I don't know if she's aware of this program, but if not, I know she'll be interested.

As for Goodwill, we've started going, usually just to look around and enjoy the atmosphere and the retro music. We donate clothing and other things we no longer need. We have also bought a few things. If someone donates a TV they don't want, and Goodwill sells it for $45, that money goes directly back to the company to help other people. Clothing, shoes, stuffed animals, bed linens, appliances, furniture are always available. And if I buy a used article of clothing or a piece of furniture in good condition that I would have bought elsewhere, that's one more item that doesn't need to be manufactured from new materials to fill my needs. People who are in desperate need come in with vouchers to get what they need for free, and people with the means buy the higher-priced items, which puts more money back into the company. People struggling to feed and clothe their families aren't going to buy the TVs and bread machines, but the sale of those items benefits them anyway. It's a win-win in my opinion.

Er, the food packages are not handed out, they're purchased.

And there is a distinct difference between a charity and a nonprofit organization--you seem to be confusing/equating the two, and this program with a food bank.

Um actually that was my point. The program is obviously designed for those in need. Not for tight asses who have no shame exploiting a service designed to prevent people from going hungry.

This is not harleytexas, this is his wife. Your posts have infuriated me. To start with, this was posted in the thread already but you seem to have chosen to ignore it. Taken off of the Angel Food Ministries website...

There are no qualifications, minimums, income restrictions, or applications.

Everyone is encouraged to participate. Some churches even encourage participants to apply the money they saved to help someone else in need.

and the link... http://www.angelfoodministries.com/about/

Did you read that? EVERYONE is encouraged to participate.

I have been poor, dirt poor in fact, to the point where I did have to go to food banks for food and clothing for my family. At that time in my life, I wouldn't have been able to afford $30 for a box of food and I didn't have to scrape the money together because I was able to get what I needed for FREE. I had to qualify for those items by proving my families income as well as residency. Angel Food is not this sort of program. Angel Food is for anyone at all and yes, there are programs through churches where you have to have proof of income. I know because I was involved with several of them. I am no longer in such a dire financial state but that doesn't mean that I don't need to save money. I shop at thrift stores quite often as well. I have 4 children to help take care of as well as trying to find clothing for myself. I would rather have money that I need to pay my bills than pay high prices for clothing or other items that I can find at a thrift store. Saving money on groceries just makes sense and Angel Food is just as happy to get my business as someone who's family is not as well off as we are. I donate to food banks now when I can and I'm happy to do it because they were there for me when I needed them. I would never lie to get something I wasn't entitled to but again, I don't have to for Angel Food because the point is not to only feed the indigent.

Ok, that's enough of that. You should really just pay attention next time before you start ranting and putting people down.

Thank you for saying what I was thinking.

We got September's food box last weekend. It was the first time I actually went to pick it up. It was a nice experience, the volunteers were incredibly nice and friendly. The food box was, again, beyond my expectations. Such a great value in a time when I'm looking for great values.

We ended up talking it up enough for someone else I know to order one. And, many more are looking into it. I have been talking with the secretary of my Church, trying to figure out how to explain the program to the many immigrants and elderly of our congregation.

It really is a win-win situation if you can be disciplined enough to remember the ordering and picking up dates.

If anyone else does it on here, I'd like to hear your experiences.

If the program makes enough money to support itself, it is the same concept as shopping at discount store. Nothing wrong with that?

I passed the links along. We are thinking of giving this a try. Does the meat come frozen? We don't use pork, but if it's frozen, we can pass it along to the food bank. The local food bank said yesterday on the radio that demand did not drop when school started as anticipated, and the need is running at holiday season levels. People are really feeling the crunch, especially those most in need.
