I guess it rather depends if you read as a form of escapism or as a confirmation that life really does suck!

Orwell's endings are pretty depressing - especially in 1984 where two people are physically and mentally destroyed by the state. I think its an interesting concept, but more could have been made of it if Orwell did more to establish the relationship between Winston and Julia.

And I thought House of Sand and Fog was depressing... (the movie anyway) where one of the characters puts a plastic bag over his head and suffocates himself to death.
