Call it Ugly American syndrome right here in the USA!

The Rush to judge and stereotype never ceases to amaze, and people form strong opinion with little to no information.

Immigrants are portrayed poorly in our media, and I mostly see that reflection.

I had hoped that we had evolved slightly more than it appears.

My husband gets to listen to how much Muslims are hated by people at his work on a daily basis, and someone even had the nerve to call him a terrorist to his face when they figured he was Muslim. That's West Michigan for you. On the positive side, they sure like his couscous and encourage him to bring more. So weird.

Happened to me before I was engaged.

Initially came to US under B1 visa to attend company workshop and conference. I met someone who asked me to out for coffee. We did had coffee once then we exchanged couple of SMS. Once, he sent a picture of a c*ndom with a note that "saw this while cleaning you might like the flavor". Being from a more conservative country, I responded in a polite way that he might had misunderstood things. and he sent me a message "You are just like any other asian you used me". I was like "What are you talking about? Is it the $3-ish coffee that you paid for? I got 10usd over here. I can give you a refund and you can keep the change"

It happened before I got married I came on a student/seasonal job visa for my summer break from college and there was a lot of other young girls and guys from different countries working in this village but in different places, restaurant, hotels, shops... and I was working in a small souvenir shop and on the weekends I had to set up a stand outside and sell  t-shirts on the farmers market, and back then my English was good enough to understand the customers and make them understand me but the bad thing that day was that I didn't know what the word "shrink" meant, and this man came to me asking if the t-shirts shrink so I told him to repeat one more time and he got so angry to me saying out loud that how could I be working there because I didn't even know how to speak English  and a lot of things that I couldn't understand back then and he looked at me like if I was the worst thing on the planet that even this other woman that was a customer had to tell him to stop being rude to me. That was the only time somebody treated me bad here and I felt so ashamed but I didn't tell him anything I just say thank you to the woman, but I was younger then and this really made me feel bad, but the truth is that rude, ignorant and racist people exist in every country in the world, but it will always be their problem, not mine ^_^

Only since the 2016 election. I feel like bigots and racists have been emboldened by the person they elected president.

I work in customer service on the phone and all I have is my voice. Sadly I have an accent and when I serve my customers and they don't like the answer I give them, they tell me things like I shouldn't be in this country (how did they even know where I was located) or they insist I tell them which country I'm in because there is a delay in the phone and I must be abroad somewhere. Or after I explain something and they didn't like to hear it they tell me they want to speak with someone who speaks English. As if I talked something else to them. I take it bad still and I wish I had a witty comeback. But I don't and I go home crying.
