Should Women Propose Marriage????????????????

Should women propose marriage?

In recent years, it has become increasingly popular to live in common-law arrangements, which has behooved many men. After all, why buy the cow if the milk is free? Well, apparently the milk has been pasteurized, bottled and distributed. According to Dr. Sheri Jacobson, a relationship counselor at Harley Therapy in London, tides are shifting and she "expect that more women than ever will be proposing in 2008."

We suppose that's a boon for florists, dress makers, DJs, and caterers, but it castrates men of their last traditional role as the one who wears the pants. Proposing, despite being done according to the woman's time line and expectations, is our last vestige of dominance over women. There are more women in college than men, their numbers continue to grow in the workforce and now they want to own us -- because that's what marriage is, ownership.Should women propose marriage to men? Would you accept a marriage proposal from a woman? Would men feel warm and special or would you feel emasculated?

(((i want to know your opinion,,,,i have a friend she seeing this guy for almost 1yr.they really love each other..she want to marry this guy...but this guy didnt propose to her,,,she keep asking me what if she propose,,,,,,,what do you think?

I'm not so sure I'm down with the 'proposing marriage=ownership' angle.

My thoughts exactly. It was to my understanding that marriage was supposed to be an equal partnership. It rarely is, of course, but that's what we usually aim for it to be, regardless of how it may turn out. However, I can't see either the husband nor the wife being property of the other in this day and age.

As for women proposing... well, I don't see anything wrong with it in theory. If a woman is with a guy and she really wants to marry him or he's been waiting too long (according to her), why shouldn't she ask? If she does, she'll have to realize that he can say "no" or "I need more time to think about it" just as women have been doing for years to men.

From what I can tell, most women don't have much of a problem with traditional roles so long as they aren't kept to them. In other words, your wife may want to homemaker for a few years while taking care of the kids, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's all she wants out of life. At some point, she might want to go back to work or even work from home. Maybe she likes cooking or even prefers that she does it (instead of you), but that doesn't mean she has to be alone in the kitchen while she's making dinner (keeping her company, for instance, is usually quite appreciated) or that she needs to clean up/wash dishes by herself, either. There's nothing wrong with assisting her, especially if she made the meal.

Taking on a few traditional aspects, from what I can see, is usually just fine for most women. They just don't want to be pidgenholed into the "1950s housewife" role.

What an absolutely charming analogy!

but it castrates men of their last traditional role as the one who wears the pants. Proposing, despite being done according to the woman's time line and expectations, is our last vestige of dominance over women.

Eh?

I was always under the impression most men hated proposing! They'd be happy if their girlfriends proposed and went to all the effort instead of them. All I ever hear are complaints from men who are frustrated/bewildered/worried about 'having' to buy their girlfriend a ring and how it's unfair that men don't usually receive anything in return. I see a lot of threads in help and advice forums on proposing and never do I see any real enthusiasm from the men. This is why I was so glad that Alex insisted he'd honestly like to formally propose - I was worried that he'd feel obliged to and I made it very clear that he in no way had to work out a proposal or buy a ring.

I'm not so sure I'm down with the 'proposing marriage=ownership' angle.

Me either.

Ideally I think something as important as marriage should be agreed upon and discussed between the couple before a surprise proposal is sprung. Okay, knowing beforehand that you both plan to get married someday may take out a little of the surprise but there's still plenty left to be surprised about - the location/timing of the proposal and the actual ring, for example. I couldn't imagine saying 'yes' to a man without knowing what kind of marriage he expected, whether he wanted children, etc. I can't actually remember who brought up marriage first in my relationship but we had agreed months before that we would be married and had thrashed out most our of hopes and dreams and plans for the future before any proposal.

If you feel emasculated, that you need to be dominant over women, that your woman is your personal property, and that a woman proposing to you means you're not wearing the pants any more, I suspect you are experiencing significant misogyny issues and should seek professional help.

Seriously. I would never consider even dating a man with those sorts of issues. Those are huge red flags to me and would cause me to walk away from any such relationship.

That said, I was perfectly prepared to propose to my fiance. However, I allowed him to do it because I knew that it was important to him. Of such little concessions are good relationships made. :)

Does it really matter who proposes to whom?

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
