New Vaccination Requirements

I just spoke with Dr. Laity's secretary (who, by the way, was as totally awesomely stupendous as she was last year ) who asked how old I was (27) and breathed a sigh of relief because:

The new required vaccines include: All females between 11? and 26 must have the Gardasil vaccine.

That's 3 shots, and as far as I know, there is normally a waiting period between shots of a few months, correct?

Dr. Laity's secretary also sympathized with my scheduling predicament and aren't going to as for new passport photos (WOOP!) and got me a short-notice appointment; they're really flexible and understanding over there. Awesome.

So head's up on the new vaccination requirements if you are 26 or under.

wow thanks! I had no clue. I guess I will prob have to get it done before i go through AOS. Maybe i should try and get it here before i move.

I hate to be skeptical but I do not think HPV is communicable and therefore is an immigration concern... something just does not seem proper here.... YMMV

Well I just checked the USCIS website on vaccinations and they indicate nothing in this regard

Gardasil is also still in testing....and has been found in some instances already to cause cervical cancer at a higher rate than HPV. They won't give the vaccine to everyone though. You can't have had more than three partners. 90% of people have HPV in some form or another already so if you've had more than 3 partners I think it was they won't give you the vaccine. Also, I think it's like $200 PER shot! I know I don't want to spend that kind of money cause I'm ALMOST 27! Man alive! That's ridiculous!

I just checked the vaccination work sheet that the Doctor filled out and its not even listed anywhere on the form think they were just trying to get more money out of you.

I just had mine too...but K3's (dont know about K1's) do not have to have their vaccines done until AOS. I guess i will wait and see if I need to get it done at AOS stage and then see what happens

Last time, the Doctor's office suggested I call around to my local public health unit to get any vaccines done fo, they did not mention anything about giving me the vaccine themselves, and let me know I won't need to have it as I am 27, which clearly points to them trying to bilk money out of me , but that is beside the point.

I am just being responsible about warning people about this as soon as I heard it; the xpresspost envelope was required for HOW LONG before they bothered to warn people about it on the website or interview letter?

If you are under 26, you should check to find out for sure if you need it. This is the kind of nasty surprise you don't want sprung on you out of the blue and too late to do anything about it.

I have to concur.... this vaccine is pretty knew, where was the info from? Honestly I would wonder if the Dr's office was just interested in a little more $$$

there's no indication that gardasil will cause cancer-it's only been out of testing for 1 year so there is no way to show that the vaccine can cause cancer. However, it is very clearly shown the HPV causes cancer.

Generally, the vaccine is being targeted towards virgins. I'd guess that if you're not a virgin and really want the vaccine and are tested to be HPV negative you could probably get a dr to prescribe it, but it's not ideal. However just because you don't want to pay to get a vaccine isn't a reason to subscribe to the paranoia the vaccines cause some kind of catastrophic disease.

also, 50% of sexually active people will have an HPV infection in their life, not 90% of people right now have the infection

My daughter got the vaccine. She advised that you can't have it (well, in SK) unless you've been tested first. They don't want to bother giving it I suppose if you're positive for the virus already. I don't know if it's a blood test, but I would assume it would be. I also think it's given over a period of time, so IF you were to get it, or we find out that you are supposed to have it for immigration, it should be done early. Please make sure that if this information is correct, that it appears somewhere on the medical or vaccination information here on VJ, in relation to Canada anyway.

Interesting. Lindsay just went and had her vaccines last week, but not that one. She was getting them out of the way before the medical. Anyway, she had a sexual health exam in March, but I don't know if they tested for HPV. Hmmm.

I'll be having my appt tomorrow so I'll ask them some hard questions about where this requirement originated.
