Hey guys . I've been looking through a lot of place online but couldn't find any info about this anywhere do I decided to make a topic about it . I know uscis processing times show that they're currently working on cases from August 3 2016 and I also know that wherever you go they say it takes almost a year if not more to get your i-751 approved but my brother in law filed in May 2016 and got approved in August 2016 so it took only 3 months and I filed in September 2017 and still waiting he's telling me that i should get approved anytime now . My question is does it matter which State you live at the time of filing . Because we live in Knoxville Tennessee and he said it takes faster in Tennessee and that 1 year period is for bigger states that has more application going in . If anyone from Tennessee has had the same experience as my brother in law please let me know.  Thanks in advance .

Hey cyberfx1024 thanks for reply I know that current processing time is 12 months I'm just trying to find out if there's anyone else got it approved that quick or my brother in law just got lucky . I'm wondering if it matters which State you reside or not as some states has less immigrants so less applications where some states has more.  Thank you

Your brother-in-law got VERY lucky!  Even when he applied, the wait was usually closer to 6 months than 3, usually. If he's in Tennessee, he would have sent his application to the California Service Center, which at that time was way ahead of Vermont (the other center that processes I-751s). California was processing applications in about 4 - 6 months (usually) and Vermont was at about  7 - 9 months (roughly).

Unfortunately, around October of 2016, the California Service Center, for whatever reason (we have theories but no answers), pretty much stopped processing I-751s altogether for several months, and has continued falling further and further behind. People who applied in August 2016, like me, have been waiting for 15 months, and it seems like CSC is just getting to our applications now. Meanwhile, the Vermont service center has slipped a little bit but is mostly processing applications from about a year ago. (So Nov-Dec 2016)

Your brother in law's application sneaked into the California Service Center just in the nick of time and got processed before everything slowed down. He's very lucky, and I, for one, am envious, but it has nothing to do (really) with being from a less populous state; only that he got his application in before everything went sideways.

Sorry I can't give you too much hope of a quick end to the waiting, although you never know - sometimes, suddenly, it's like USCIS gets their collective butts in gear and gets all caught up fairly quickly. That could happen here (I doubt it, but maybe). Most likely though, you're in for the wait.

Is your timeline updated?

I can attest to the fact that it used to be much quicker.  My husband also filed in 2016 and it was approved in about 4 months at CSC.  Current processing times are very slow.

We got hit with the slowdown anyway.  2 years ago, N-400 applications at our local office were taking 6 months.  They are now taking 12-15 months.

USCIS policy:

Tennessee residents get first preference because it is the best state to live in.  Everyone knows that and the gubmint acknowledges it by putting petitions in front of the line.

Texas is next.  Then 45 states get processed in the order they come in.  California and New York petitions get put in the bottom of the stack.  New Jersey petitions get put in a box and shredded at the end of each working day.

My friends from CALIFORNIA also filed I-751 (same sex marriage) in May 2016 and got approved in September 2016.

So, there's that data point that contradicts the theory that there is a priority by State.

It is more like nightingalejules says:

In the last quarter of 2016, there was a significant slowdown in processing I-751 applications at CSC and VSC (much more significant at CSC).

Why? I am going to guess they are probably understaffed or processing other type of applications. But, really, it is irrelevant why. They are just taking longer for apps submitted after October 2016.

All I can say your brother in law was lucky and at that time CSC was not at such unprecedented slow processing speed as it is now. CSC is taking forever to approve applicants if you hear anything from them in next few months let us know. CSC on average these days takes 15 to 16 months to process I-751 cases.

My I-485 was approved in almost 4 months and it was processed at San Diego, CA Field Office (submitted in August 2014, 2-year green card received in November 2014). Why is that relevant?

My I-751 was submitted in September 2016. At the current CSC processing times, I expect it will be approved in January 2018 or February 2018.
