ONGOING RELATIONSHIP - GETTING FACEBOOK CHAT HISTORY

Hi everyone

 

I am trying to do the proof of on-going relationship part of the i129f

 

We spoke for about 3 months on viber so it wasn't difficult to get that but for the past two years we have spoken everyday on Facebook messenger. We have some earlier conversations on skype too. No whatsapp chats.

 

I am struggling to add a timeline to prove the relationship is ongoing as snipping tool makes the dates for skype and messenger so tiny it's hard to see, one snip would have to fill an a4 page to make the dates visible. It's easier on the computer as it allows you to search keywords and open the conversation from there. Screenshots from a mobile work really well however scrolling through 2 years worth of messages is gonna take me forever and a day, it took me 1 and a half hours to scroll through a month on my phone and the higher up in time I go the slower the phone gets.

 

Are people just scrolling and screenshotting or am I missing something?

Can you get a log? Like dates you talked on and for how long. 

 

New Zealand is not a high fraud country. So someone said yesterday on a thread (sorry, cannot remember where), that if your country is not a high fraud country you can provide a log to show how frequent you talked and select a few conversations about travel plans, your future life, etc. But you don't need to show every conversation or every message you sent to each other.

Where would I be able to get a messenger log? 

 

If I select a few conversations (which is what I have been trying to do) then it would take me hours and hours to scroll up and get them.

This method is what we initially tried but the dates show too small to snip more than one little shot on an A4 page.

This is an example. 3 snips do not fit on a page, and they would be too tiny. If I made it any bigger than the second snip then only one would fit on an A4 page. I am not worried about the content of the conversation, I think the dates are what need to be visible.

Edit: There is another app in the link too. You save it as a csv file (spreadsheet you can open w/excel), you might be able to organize it by date. If that doesn't work you can save it as txt.

It took me a while but I tried that method, it doesn't provide names in chat logs but numbers e.g 123456@facebook.com, It is all randomly mixed with others conversations and random dates too :/

 

I think scrolling up is our only option. Thanks for the help.

Maybe you can make the snips a little smaller, like... instead of this:

So that you can focus on just the dates?? That way you can fit more dates on one page and you could use your computer instead of your phone. You'd be able to fit maybe three or four screen shots of that.

 

Like you said, I think it's the dates that are more important. That's what I did with out KIK conversations, I didn't get all of the records but just focused on the dates.

I was able to download facebook chat log to bring to the interview. It came in a huge, unorganized text file that involved every chat I ever had since day 1 of signing up for facebook. As in one section of text was from 2012 then the next section of text would be from 2015. Although it took a good while, like several days of "copy and paste" and scrolling, I was able to get snippets of conversations between my husband and I from the inception of our relationship in 2010. Overall I had over 10,000 pages in texts between us.  Went through and picked a few days worth of conversation of ever 4-5 months. In the end it didn't even matter as the consulate officer didn't ask for any additional evidence.

 

I say all that to say that it is possible to get your chat log but unless there's a better way to do it, be prepared to be spending a good amount of time if you want it organized. It was totally worth it to watch our relationship develop over that 6 year period!  Good luck!

We had to scroll and screenshot.........and it took hours to document our 13 months of twice daily chats.  We finally settled for a screenshot every 2 weeks.........no questions about it at interview.

You can print your entire facebook chat log with the dates by clicking the drop down arrow on the top right.Go to settings and then a page that will load will say at the top General account settings. At the bottom of the page it will say DOWNLOAD A COPY OF YOUR FACEBOOK DATA. Click that and then it will redirect you to another page. I'm the middle of the page there will be a green button that says START MY ARCHIVE . After you press that it will take about 5 minutes to get all the messages.Go back to the page that your pressed START MY ARCHIVE and then it should say download. After that you will need to download it to your computer.Open the file and right click it and save it as a PDF so you can scroll through all of the pages. You will also be able to search the PDF file for a specific date.

I am sorry I mispoke . Once you click on the file that says facebook-(your user name) the file to click on is html. For Mac users when you click on it , it will act as a link. So you will need to export it as a PDF. Im not sure how to export it as a PDF for other PCs.
