Just got off the phone with The NVC told me they received my case but it can take up to 42 days to be entered into the system and assigned a case number....Is this just their regular "script" response or is it really taking 42 days after they receive it for me to get a case number?

There have been some cases where it did take a while but I would suggest calling back in 2 weeks. Usually the case number is assigned in about 2 weeks. They say 42 days to get you off their back. In that time your papers can already be in DR and ready for interview.

We're at day 35 since NVC receipt date (50 days since NOA2) and was told this morning 42 days. This means another week if I'm tracking correctly. I plan on calling daily now to get a number. Definitely a roller coaster. When we started we thought we'd have an interview date already. Boy, were we delusional!

This is very interesting - are they taking different times to give out the case number for different types of Visas, or is it the same for all - I'm seeing K1 visa people reporting 2 weeks, and IR-1 and others saying 30-40 days ?

Took me about 5 weeks to get one. I don't know why you're surprised. When it comes to government, don't expect fast results. And to put your 42 days in context, I mailed off my wife's I-485, I-131 and I-765 back in November, did the biometrics shortly after receiving the case number, but I'm still waiting for them to approve her travel papers and work release.
