We did online and had no issues. At this point it feels to me that more could go wrong with paper.

Filing online is so easy and you get the receipt notice right away. It's worth it just to avoid any potential mailing issues and having to wait for the receipt notice, imo.

You also don't have to do the application all at once. You can start working on it at your leisure, and submit when you are ready. We started my husband's application in December, but wanted to file after the holidays, so just worked on it here and there until we were 100% ready to file + pay the fee. (Note - you have 30 days to complete/submit the application once you start, but as long as you log in and work on it before the 30 days is up, it extends for another 30 days).

Other perks of filing online - If you get other notices, such as a biometrics appointment, you'll have access to the notice immediately (you will also still receive hard copies in the mail). You can also add additional evidence after filing, if needed, in the "unsolicited evidence" section.

I got Naturalized yesterday! The interview was good, the officer was nice and the process was straightforward. He asked me the following questions:

    1. Where is the Statue of Liberty located?
    2.  What happened on Sept 11, 2001?
    3. Name one of the writers of the Federalist Papers.
    4. What is the capital of the State?
    5. How many voting members are in the House of Representatives?
    6. What is one of the powers of the States?

Then he asked me to read: Who can Vote?
    Write: Citizens can vote

After that I was approved! The rest of the interview was regular questions and updating information for USCIS. He asked me if I wanted to do the Oath today, I said yes. He sent the request and exited his office. My Oath was scheduled for 1 pm (same building, different entrance).

I received my Naturalization Certificate, and a packet with other relevant information.

We are very happy, Good luck to everyone else waiting!

My interview was today at the Chicago Field Office. It was really smooth and everyone was really nice! My husband was able to come in with me and wait which was an unexpected but nice surprise.

    Questions I was asked:

    1. What territory did the United States buy from France in 1803?
    2. Who makes federal laws?
    3. We elect a president for how many years?
    4. What did Martin Luther King Jr. do?
    5. The idea of self government is in the first three words of the constitution. What are these words?
    6. What is the name of the president now?

I don't remember the sentence I read out loud, but my writing test was "Washington was the first president". She helped me with a name change that I didn't realize I needed, and we changed two things since I applied: a trip over Christmas and that I am still a member of a work union. She was really lovely and made me feel comfortable. She had my file open on her desk, and it had all of my immigration paperwork back from my K-1 visa. It was fun to see paperwork I hadn't seen in years! I wouldn't have realized it but I recognized the colourful tabs I used to organize all the different parts.

The officer said they are currently scheduling oath ceremonies for March, so we will see.

Amy and Michael reacted to NYBEtt in Recent Experience with Expedited Passport Agencies
I am back to report on my experience applying for a passport at a US Passport Agency (in NYC specifically). For information on how to get an appointment at any US Passport Agency for urgent travel (i.e. any travel within 3 business days) you can read my post here (or scroll up).

Abridged version (aka TL;DR version): Appointment was at 2:30PM. Had passport in hand by 6:00PM!!

    Too Long version:
I arrived 20 minutes before my appointment and the guard told me to return 5 minutes before my schedule time, at which point they would call everyone with a 2:30PM appointment to come in. The process gives you good hope for a quick result when you finally enter. The guards outside are nice, tell you that you will be in for 40 minutes and will get your passport no later that 2 hours after your registration.    After entering you go through a metal detector, smooth ride.    Then you wait to be helped. After a 10 minute wait, it’s your turn and a federal employee checks your documents, tells you everything is okay. You are super happy! What a smooth registration you think …. However, this is only a check to see if your appointment is valid.    You get a number and are directed to the 10th floor … don’t be shocked when you enter. There are 30 windows but all except 3 are draped and 20 ppl waiting ahead of you - some of them arrived 2 hours before you …    When it’s finally your turn, your documents are verified, you take an oath stating all your documents are valid, and pay your dues.    You then get the notice that your passport will be ready after a minimum wait of three hours 😩. In my case, it was 4pm so I was expected to be waiting until 7pm. I was told the outside door closes at 5pm. So, I had 60 minutes to run outside, grab a sandwich, and get back into the building before security locks the door.    Luckily, my passport was ready by 6pm so I picked it up with all my documents (including my original naturalization certificate) and I am now free to travel without restrictions once again!   Side note: You absolutely need to be traveling within 3 business days to be allowed into the building....but they don't seem to mind whether or not you actually intend to travel within 3 business days. A woman trying to get a passport for her 1-month old baby had travel plans 6 days out and the employee told her to call the airline to change her ticket for the upcoming weekend and then she could change it back after she gets a passport. So the employee let her in after she did that. Of course this is a bit odd because you have to take an oath swearing your documents are valid so 🤷‍♂️   Personal note:

Kind of unfair that a woman with a 1-month old had to go through this when she had no other option. Meanwhile, families with 7 children (you can make an appointment for up to 7 people in one slot if you are in the same household) who irresponsibly did not renew their passports in time are hogging up the appointment slots and the queue time 😒

I want to say Thank you for this information and just want to update for my experience currently (Feb 2022)

My husband successfully passed his interview in January and had his oath yesterday February 9th.  We've been hoping to travel to Wales, UK at the end of February and up until this week were just hoping to pay for an expedited passport through a Passport Acceptance Facility and cross our fingers that we got it in 2 weeks versus the previously quoted 3-5 for Expedited Passports.  Now, Expedited means 5-7 weeks (from what I can tell the timeframe changed recently - Late Jan/Early Feb).  So, we realized the chances of us getting in 2 were practically 0.

So, we have an appointment using the "Urgent Travel" request

As stated above - you must have travel planned for the next 14 days.  If you call on a Thur - your travel must be for 13 days from that day - so practically 2 weeks ahead but no later than the Wed.  Example - when I called on his oath day Thur February 9th - travel must be no later than Wed Feb 22.  They will look for and schedule you for an Urgent Travel appointment at one of the 26 appointment facilities.

Big note - it does not seem nearly as hard to get through as it was above for Original Poster.  I called 4 times - once a day before the Oath (at approx 2:00 p.m.?) to test out the phone options, etc and I got through right away.  I asked about making an appointment and was given clear information about the two week time frame, etc.   I called twice yesterday (at approx 10:20, 10:25 a.m.)  and we ended up scheduling an appointment in Dallas as there were none in Chicago (and we can fly direct from our local airport to Dallas on American Airlines), and called back today (at exactly 7 a.m.) and got an appointment in Chicago on Wed Feb 22.

I do know that I had to press 1 for English, 1 for new passport, and 2 for Urgent Passport (and was not able to do a 112 right away to avoid listening to the menus).

Will let you know if he gets his passport the same day as his appointment.  I've read some people have to go back the next day and I'm really really hoping this isn't the case, but we will figure it out with travelling to Chicago to get it before our flight to LHR.

Thanks again @Timona for this great post and information.

    Mods, pin this. @millefleur @TBoneTX

    To future readers
There are 3 ways of obtaining PP.
Apply via PO or PP agents Apply at your local ASC - American embassy at your country Apply at one of the 26 regional PP Agencies in the US
I am only gonna touch on 2 & 3 as apparently, there is a sudden rush for international travel.

    For 2.
For this, you can leave the US anytime without US PP.  However, before you leave, go to your local embassy website and check if they require appointment to visit them. If they do, secure one and make sure your travel plans/ timeframe falls within your ASC's processing times. You can then leave US. Just make sure the ASC appointment falls within their processing times. I cannot stress this enough. I do not want someone to leave and say @Timona said I could leave anytime. All that being said, you will still have to provide your ACS with itinerary that shows you will be departing within 72 hours of obtaining the PP.

Example: I secured an ASC appointment. I come back on the 21st of September. I managed to get an appointment at my ASC for the 7th of September as my local ASC takes 2 week to process.

    For 3
Urgent Travel Service: Some agencies and centers are also offering extremely limited appointments for customers who have urgent international travel in the next 72 hours (3 business days) for reasons other than a life-or-death emergency. You may schedule an appointment if you are traveling within 2 weeks or need a foreign visa within 4 weeks; however, the appointment cannot occur more than 3 business days before your date of travel, or 10 days if you require a visa. Call 1-877-487-2778 or 1-888-874-7793 TDD/TTY from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. ET, Mondays through Fridays. Our appointment line for Urgent Travel Service is closed on weekends and federal holidays.

To explain the red part with an example: Today is August 11th. So available appointments are from now till August 24th. So you can call today and get an appointment anywhere between now and August 24th. However the likelihood of you getting an appointment within the first 9 out the 13 days is unlikely as they might have been filled long ago. That is why I would suggest calling early and booking anywhere from 10 to 13 days out. Booked date has to be within 72 hours (3 business days) of travel. So if I call today and make an appointment for 24th, I need to be travelling by 27th. Weekends do not count as business hours/ days.

Now that we have explained rule, how do we get appointment under 3?

Dial 877-487-2778  and quickly punch in 11224 then press 4 again if it starts talking, regardless of what option you are looking for. This is just to get you past the annoying automated system. If you get a hanging tone afterwards, that means you will not be connected. Hang up and try later. However, if after punching the 1122....you hear " This call will be monitored & recorded for blaa blaa blaa" bingo, you are going to be connected. Just wait. Average hold times is around 1 - 1.5 hours. DO NOT HANG up even if after 1 hour it tells you that you have another 1.5 hours to go. Surprisingly, it will later re-adjust and the next update will say you have 30 mins. Thereafter, the hold times will keep decreasing.

DOS hold times are pretty accurate though. I give them props for that. It is not the normal bait and switch that we are used to when we call ATT.

I have found out the best time to connect is by calling around 7:30am CST or 2:15pm CST.

I got an appointment for this for Houston for next week. If I get PP, I will cancel my ASC appointment. It was easier to get ASC upto 2 weeks ago as getting US appointment was difficult due to bots which would snatch all online  appointments and sell for profit. DOS has now since changed that such that the only way to get an appointment at one of the local PPA is by calling.

I do not think you can get passport in 2 weeks based on expedited processing.  You may want to consider applying based on "urgent travel".  Here is what it says on their website:

"Choose this service if you have urgent international travel plans within 14 calendar days for reasons other than a life-or-death emergency. Restrictions apply. Call 1-877-487-2778 to make an appointment"

    Good luck.

My husband had his interview last Thursday 1/5/2023 in Milwaukee and passed.  Was hoping for a same day Oath, but they said he'd get a letter in the mail in the next two weeks scheduling the Oath Ceremony.
Saw on Wed 1/11, in his USCIS account that we will be getting that letter soon - it's scheduled for 2/9/23.  Hoping to go on a trip at the end of February so already scheduled a same day passport appointment to get a passport as they take your Permanent Resident Card at the Oath I've read.  Hoping with expedited it comes faster than the 3-5 weeks - as we want to leave before the end of February!  Fingers Crossed!  At least we got it all scheduled - I've read some have had longer waits at every step - even after the passed Interview - so thankful for that.

I had my interview today and I was approved! The interview was really easy, I brought all documents including copies and originals, but the officer only asked me for my 2-year and 10-year green cards and also any photos of my husband and I. I printed three pages, one for every of the last three years, but the officer only took the page from this year, I guess because the rest of the photos were in my case already.
There seemed to be some issues with the internet, so I took the oath right after the interview and got my certificate shortly after! We had to drive really far to the office, so taking the oath the same day, especially right after the interview was great.

    Good luck to everyone !

    Hello everyone,
I had my interview today and I was approved!! The officer asked me 6 questions for the civic test and then she asked me to read a three words sentence and to write another three words sentence. Then she asked me questions about myself and my family before congratulating me.
she asked me if I wanted to attend the same day oath ceremony they were having but it was later today and I had to get back home so my husband could go to work (he was watching our kids). She said no problem at all and that I will receive a letter with another oath ceremony date
Such a fast and smooth process!
