Well now we are talking about something I do know about. I have been umming and arring about getting a back up system, and I know many people who are off grid, mainly because it is cost prohibitive to connect to the grid.
I am slightly out of date but last I remember they were charging $5k a pole, one guy I met in the Brewery was told he would have to have it trenched in, now that is serious money.
So if you need say 10 poles do you pay $50k or install your own system?
Anyway Tesla is a nice solution but there are others, and if you just go for the regular Batteries they are now down to 20c a Watt, New Solar Panels are around 50c a Watt and Inverters etc are coming down.
When you have Costco selling systems well.
When walking the pups yesterday I walked past a charging system, and there was a guy with a Ford Lightning charging up, he came up from Denver and forgot his charging cable and was probably OK to get back but decided to be safe. He very rarely uses the supercharges, just plugs it in overnight. Now he has the big battery option which I think it 150kw so a lot of energy.
Friends who are off grid have a massive house and a system installed 20 years ago, I am sure they will upgrade their batteries next time they need replacing to LiPo, which will see them out. They have a back up Diesel Generator but seem to never use it, they do have wood stoves.
I think bidirectional charging is a major step forward.
This guy knows his stuff:
