No problem for a CR-1 or IR-1 entrant.

Conversely, if K-1 entrants buy a round-trip, it's important that they cancel the return portion as a priority after they enter the U.S.  This is because airlines sometimes fail to correct their passenger manifests and the K-1 entrant is erroneously listed as having left the U.S. before AOS, thus having to prove the "negative" of "no, I didn't leave."

U.S. Customs and Border Protection won't care.  If they ask why you have a return ticket tell them it was cheaper that way.

If you do it to the same airline, multiple times, and they keep track of it, they may eventually tell you to take your business elsewhere.

They really only care about the outbound ticket for visitors, not immigrants.  In our experience there was not a question about the ticket type, and I don’t know of anyone else that’s been asked.  It’s not unusual for someone to arrive to activate their visa and return to finish up loose ends in their home country.  With the visa, your spouse can travel in and out again so I don’t see a problem or a reason it would be looked at.

    Hey everyone,
Here are some updates from our case:

September 29th, 2023 : We submitted all of our documents to NVC through CEAC.
October 6th, 2023 : We ended up having to resubmit one and we resubmitted it on this date.
    October 16th, 2023 : We got DQ!!
November 6th, 2023 : Received our Interview Date by email!

Does anyone know if they also mail out a letter before the interview or if we need to print out the email that we received and bring it to the interview?

    Hi all,

Just updating that today we received an email letting us we've become Documentary Qualified. The review took 11 days since we submitted all documents. Our consulate seems to take close to a year after becoming DQ to schedule interviews, so we're not expecting any news until next year.

    Very nice - congratulations!  Similarly,

October 13, 2023 - Submitted all documents to NVC via CEAC
    October 29, 2023 - Submitted additional documents
    November 7, 2023 - DQ

Now just awaiting interview date.  I was wondering how backlogged NVC is post-DQ and awaiting interview dates so this gives me some hope.  The category for us is IR5 (parents of US citizens).

We received our interview appointment date by email on November 6th, 2023. I was wondering if they also mail out a letter before the interview or if we need to print out the email that we received and bring that to the interview?

    Try it on a PC.

Type Not Applicable, then copy and past as needed.  If the first field in a series in N/A, just indicate it once.  Note that some answers ARE applicable with the answer being NONE.  It's not the same thing.

Correct as to the actual question, but there are additional documents needed for joint sponsors.  Find the requirement in the I-864 instructions.  Become an A Student of THAT document before proceeding.

The answer to the question is probably "NO" because your parents only needed to apply for your passport.  Getting a certificate of citizenship is purely optional and an unnecessary expense.  I would simply answer the question with a NO and move on.  If your answer is wrong, it is a meaningless mistake.

I absolutely second what this person said. We were under 18 when my parents were naturalized, so they didn't get the certificates for us. They just automatically got us passports.

Yes I submitted it online. I put no I don't have a certificate.

If it won't let you move on, then I would put "no" and then still explain the situation on the last page.

Are you sure your parents got a certificate for you?

When one naturalizes and is able to include their children as you described above- the certificate is not automatically issued.  Nor is the passport.

To obtain a certificate you or your parents would have needed to file the n600. Its currently apx 600$ or so. Not sure how much it would have cost back then but it was always expensive (significantly more than a passport) and involves sending various supporting paperwork and takes a decent amount of time to get back. The certificate is similar to your birth certificate in the way its stressed to you that it is super important and should be kept with secure documents as its a 'one of a kind' document like your birth certificate or marriage certificate would be.

Obtaining the n600 certificate is optional. Majority of people only opt to get the passport as its easier and cheaper. Both establish citizenship proof however the certificate is needed (and only the certificate) as the passport isn't enough in very limited scenarios such as specific jobs with security clearances.

Please double check with your parents that they actually did file for the certificate. Its very odd for someone to do so and then simply misplace it.  Perhaps show them a picture of what the certificate would look like and explain the process and cost of it to be sure they actually did this because they may have just obtained passports for you all and theres nothing wrong with that, as I said you don't necessarily need the certificate in life except in very narrow circumstances which this is not.

They may be thinking of other paperwork you are given when naturalizing that has been since misplaced. Some of it might have referred to you being a derivative on their naturalization but papers like that are irrelevant.

There also is a section on the forms where you can enter additional explanations for whatever question number you may need to attach an explanation for.
