"maybe i should explain...
my fiancee is the canadian/beneficiary.
i am the petitioner and i already have a co-sponsor.
but as the person coming to the united states- will it look bad for him to be receiving welfare?
we are waiting on packet 4.
Sure doesn't help!
Will he be getting welfare in the US?
well no. he'll be getting a job and my parent's will support us until he gets on his feet here.
-
Well it is what it is - not much (if still unemployed at the time) can be done about it. Unemployment (which isn't welfare) does count as income although it is by nature temporary and will be viewed in this light.
Backup plan would be to secure a qualified Co Sponsor.

my fiancee usually works a factory job, but times are tough in his small town and they are not hiring for the season.if he goes on welfare/unemployment, will that hurt our case?
if what he does is brought up at our interview, i'm afraid they won't like his using an unemployment check to move to the u.s. :\
what should we do?
thanks in advance, guys
If the fiancee is the USC, it can hurt your case since income becomes factor. If it is not the USC then it does not become an issue.
he is the beneficiary. i am the petitioner and i have a co-sponsor.

Do they allow you to use extra pages if we crossed the border more than three times?
since we have known eachother for 10 years, we have visited COUNTLESS times. i used an extra page to give approximate visits for the last 3 years. told them it was approximate. explained how long we had been visiting and offered to try and furnish extra dates if needed (which i sincerely doubt they will need).

I acknowledge that dutch apple cheesecake is the bestest in the world.
i second THAT emotion!

I called and asked for a specific day to get my medical done and they were fine with it. Was about a week and a half after I called.
I was there for about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
peachey, did you get packet 4 yet? any news?
-
Hi everyone,
I'm just trying to be prepared. For those who did their medical in Toronto, how long does it take to make an appointment and how long were you there? Also, do we need to have all of those vaccinations the Department of State lists on their website? I'm just asking because I don't even know where to look for those records.
Any help will be great!
Tina
i went with my fiancee to the medical. we showed up 20 minutes early and were first to be seen. in all it took maybe 2 hours to be seen and the entire medical to be done. we had the rest of the day to record shop! everyone was very pleasant and nice.

It's more than just being aware. How are you "aware" and how can you "prepare" yourself in a city like Newark, NJ? It's one of the dangerous places to live in the United States....
And I will say this..I feel MUCH safe in New York City than I do in most places in North Jersey. I'd live in the city in a heart beat...well..manhattan or bk.
the same way you can be aware and be prepared in someplace like detroit. watch your ####. don't go out at night in places that you know are unsafe. keep your expensive belongings (ipods) hidden when youre on public transportation. don't court problems with people. know where you are and where you're going. look around. see people looking suspicious? walk away. stay where there are lots of people and places to be. carry a whistle or mace or an airhorn with you.
-
No, that was my point. I think if you grow up in a large urban area, you know what to look for, you are aware of certain things that someone from a smaller town might not be. That is your comfort zone, and that is what mine is. I would have a much higher chance of getting killed in a small town in the woods by some form of wildlife than I would in los angeles. I know the area, I know the people, and I know what to look for.
I've cut through central park once. Was good exercise getting chaced by a feral pack of homeless. My friend was laughing her #### off when I got back to Brooklyn and told her what I did. Aparently, you're not supposed to cut through the park at 3 a.m.
smaller towns scare me, frankly. i used to live in portland, oregon. a small city. and while i felt pretty safe- they have a large amount of crazy-assed meth heads over there. who knows what those type of people are willing to do. you know?
meanwhile, times square is now disneyland II: electric boogaloo! can't find a decent hooker anyplace here nowadays...
ps: yeah if you can go around central park at 3 am- it would be your best bet. hah!
-
That being said, would dare cut through central park at 3 a.m. on a friday night to get home quicker or go around it? (Just playing devil's advocate here)
are you asking me or saying you would?
me? some parts of central park are safer than others. i'd be more worried about being bitten by a rabid squirrel! i've been in the park late at night and because i have COMMON SENSE and am AWARE, i did feel a slight sense of urgency to quickstep it, but i did not feel impending doom.
i'd be more likely to walk through the park on the weekend, actually, because the bridge & tunnel crowd are in town getting drunk, so there are more people around.
all of this is irrelevant though, because i'm never on the west side

What are the odds of being murdered really? Well a lot lower in Calgary apparently! Now that is not to say, as I have mentioned, that Calgary is safe safe safe, it's not, it's a big city with its share of crime. In fact my Aunt was murdered here (30 years ago).
I don't fear any particular person - i'm just not crazy about living in a high crime area really.
it's all about preparedness and being aware. wherever you go.
i'm sorry about your aunt. that's really horrific. but was she murdered by someone she knew?
i think most of us here- our chances of being murdered are pretty low. unless you're involved in something you shouldn't be or are not being very aware.
i'm not saying that senseless crimes do not happen, but murdered?
-
Fear of foreigners? hmm, well i'm 100% sure that's not the case for me.
Perhaps it's that Orlando has a murder rate of 18.3 per 100,000 while Calgary has 3.14
well...i mean it's really fear of the unknown. just as long as you don't make it fear of a certain people.
as an american, i know all too well how we can be perceived by other countries. and it's not fair, of course.
i am ashamed of our guns policy. i really don't see guns as necessary in the LEAST. keep them at the gun range.
but what are the odds that you will be murdered really?
-
personally, small towns creep me out.
i feel safer here in nyc than anyplace i've ever been in the whole world.
there's ALWAYS someone around. there are ALWAYS places open that you can duck into if you ever did feel threatened.
you know not to wear expensive ###### late at night on the subway, keep to yourself- don't make yourself a target. these are common sense things though.
i know very few people who have been mugged- mostly tourists who don't follow common sense rules.
i live in spanish harlem. it's not exactly "glamorous" but i certainly do not feel unsafe at night if i need to go get something at the bodega.
i feel like a lot of this "fear" might be xenophobia...
hm.

What? I've been gone for like 6 days and nothing for my fellow canadians? K1 or CR1/IR1s? Really? For real? This is so worrisome. it's like Montreal has come to a complete stop.
seriously. the second anyone gets ANYTHING post here first!!! :\
-
i was also a commerce bank user before the changeover and have been very happy with their services. they're open 7 days a week and pretty late, too.
when they changed to td bank i was thrilled since my fiancee uses td bank at home and i thought it might be easier for him to transfer his account over (though that is yet to be seen).

That's what is so weird about Canadian immigration. There is *no* interview. You go to the office on your landing day, hand over your photos for your PR card, they ask you if you've committed a crime, you sign a paper, then you're done!
that's interesting, but what's the approval rate like? what things do people get denied for?
i don't know where my fiancee and i are at getting packet 4. last i heard it was taking 6 weeks for that. is that still the case or is it taking months and months?
i always wanted to be a fall bride

we just got tim hortons here in nyc and i don't know if it's just me, but it tastes different to me than tim's IN canada. maybe it's just the atmosphere. hell. i don't know.
i am ashamed to admit that i do love starbucks. wait- before you string me up- you've never had anything so yummy as a pumpkin spice latte and an apple fritter on a brisk fall day. god i am SO looking forward to sweater weather...
i feel like an #### for never having timbits. :| i have had a coffee crisp though. does that make any difference?

When you're filing out the forms for your interview, then put down that you were refused. If you sent the D-156 already, then just tell them at the interview if asked, that your fiance was turned away at the border as he didn't have sufficient ties to Canada (money) when visiting 8 years ago. I guess given the above OP, it appears it will be on their screen in Montreal. Just be honest when they ask you.
Infopass appointment? Gosh, you don't need that at all. Your application is now in NVC, or Montreal, and you're going to be getting an interview soon aren't you? An infopass appointment in NY isn't going to do you any good, and I don't know what you would say to them anyway? Just be prepared at your interview to explain that when your fiance was turned away at the border that you forgot, as it was 8 years ago, and you thought you'd just explain it at the interview as after he got more money he was admitted.
Didn't you already ask this in the Canada forum on your own thread? As well, another thread in another forum?
oh dear. was i supposed to send the D-156 already? i thought i was just supposed to send the checklist, the online DS-160, and whatever form (was is the biography?) i'm leaving out because i'm going insane...
i've asked this question everywhere because i am scared to death that this might ruin our chances at approval and i want to get as many opinions as i can. and i'm totally OCD about this. literally. if i can't ask questions two or three times i feel like i'll be missing something.
sorry.
it's not that i don't trust any specific person's opinion. it's not you, it's me. i'm just a worrier.

this was placed in another topic, but i thought i'd ask it here as well...
"okay guys, here's the deal we may have inadvertently lied on our k-1 paperwork.
the very first time my fiancee visited me (this was like, over 8 years ago) he was sent back at the border because the ins felt he didn't bring enough paper money with him to be in new york for a week (eventhough he had his bank card with him and he was staying with me, therefore not needing a whole lot of money anyhow).
he went home, went to the bank, pulled more money out and came to visit a day later without further incident.
he's never been denied at the border again.
on our paperwork we put he was never denied entrance to the u.s. because, frankly, we pretty much forgot about it because it was nothing to us.
is this going to come back to bite us?
really. really. worried..."
i was told to make an appointment using "infopass" but i dont know which kind of appointment we need:
"We offer 4 kinds of appointments for a case that you have already filed. Please choose from the following -
Order from Immigration Court - If you were directed to us for processing based on an order from the Immigration Judge. You must bring all documents required in the post order instructions given to you by the court.
Case Processing Appointment - If you received a notice to go to your local office for further case processing.
EAD inquiry appointment - If your I-765 employment authorization application has been pending for more than 90 days.
Case Services follow-up appointment - If it has been over 45 days since you contacted NCSC and have not received a response to your inquiry. You must bring the Service Request ID Number related to your inquiry to the appointment. "
also, do i make this appointment in the u.s. or canada? kind of confused...
and at this point (waiting for packet 4) is an infopass appointment going to do much good? i'll be talking to whoever in new york when i should be talking to the montreal people!

eff this ess! i'd put my damn foot down and say guess what? this is the woman that gave birth to me and has supported me my entire life. we are all going to be family soon, so just deal with it. unless you want awkwardness and problems for the rest of your life- i'd get it together, lady.
ask her if her intention is to make things hard for her son. because that is exactly what she's doing.
if she persists- i'd stay far away from them for christmas and have a grand old time with your fiancee, mom and sister.
some people refuse to get things through their thick skulls and insist on being selfish. these people do not deserve to be negotiated with.
-
jesus god. thats a kinghell ####### of a time to wait, guys! you're amazing for hanging in there! congratulations!!!
-
I'm gonna rent a U-Haul and put the rest in my car. My fiance's helping me move and my mom's coming with me.
Will it be a problem at the border that I have 2 vehicles with my stuff? I just figure we'll all go into secondary.
Not at all, if I recall correctly Julybride had 3 vehicles with her!
haha wow. i guess it's no surprise that the women moving have more stuff than the dudes.
my fiancee is going to give away his furniture and things like that, but he is a musician and has tons of instruments, pedals, keyboards...his computer. expensive stuff. that is too heavy to take on a plane but much less than a studio apartment worth. we're trying to figure out the best course of action. :\
-
hi folks. it's me again.
i was wondering how everyone is planning on moving all their stuff to the states. is there a special moving service for those going through the visa process?
is mailing stuff worth the cost?
thanks in advance!
will my fiancee going on welfare hurt our case?
in Canada
Posted
thanks for the info! i just don't want the people at the consulate thinking he's going to be on welfare in the u.s. too. hopefully he can secure a job in the next week, so it doesn't come to having to collect employment insurance.
ps: sorry i offended you in another thread. i agree that i worded things wrongly :\
