  1. 'shutter' (the original from thailand. stay away from the crappy american re-make) really really scared the hell out of me.

'the thing' is the only movie that ever shocked me. pretty well done and repulsive.

mostly for aesthetics and sheer beauty i loved 'suspiria'. day-glo colors and one of the most good-looking (i don't know of another way to put it) deaths ever committed to cinema (most dario argento is good though)

and if you want something that is both scary and funny and just outrageous i recommend 'drag me to hell'. too much fun!

  2. i am disabled, so my dad is our co-sponsor.

i'm helping my dad fill out the form, but i have 2 questions:

    1) question # 8- the following people are dependent on me for support.

would that be my mother (wholly), me (partially), and my fiance (partially? wholly?)?

    2) question #10- i have submitted a visa petition...on behalf of the following person. would my dad put my fiance's name or not since i am the petitioner?

and finally, a good answer for my dad's "relationship" to my fiance?

    thanks again in advance!

    1. Mom? Yes, if she has no income of her own. If she has her own job, even part time, then NO she is not a dependent. You? Depends. If you are unemployed and claimed as his dependent on incoime tax returns, then YES. If you have an income, even disability which is income, and are not claimed on his tax return, then NO. Your ifancee would be wholly dependent on the co-sponsor.

    2. He answers NO to this question. His relationship is "father of petitioner"

thanks so much, gary! really appreciated!

  5. ooh just thought of another great book that has a good design!

"another bullshit night in suck city" by nick flynn

it's a memoir (but i don't believe ANY memoir/autobiography is really entirely non-fiction- but i don't mind). very well written, sort of experimental.

Flynn's wayward father, a self-styled writer and ex-con, describes his life on Boston's streets as "another bullshit night in Suck City": he hangs out in ATM lobbies, stuffs his coat with newspaper and is often "still drunk from the night before." This biting memoir describes the years poet Flynn (Some Ether; Blind Huber) spent, in his late 20s, working at one of the city's homeless shelters, where his path crisscrossed with his down-and-out father's.

  6. All-time favourites: I cannot pick one. Here is a short-list:

Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

Who didn't read this in high-school? Holden Caulfield remains as one of my favourite literary protagonists.

    Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides

Compelling story woven through the history of a family to uncover the cause of narrator's hermaphroditic affliction.

    Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Classic tale of love between mortal and devil.

    The Stranger by Albert Camus

Existential philosophy in prose-form - A funeral, a murder, and death row.

    Battle Royale by Koushun Takami

What happens when a class of 42 ninth-graders are forced to kill each other or be killed by a totalitarian government program? This is.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami

Sweeping work involving a seemingly mundane man, who in the process of looking for his lost cat comes across a myriad of curious characters including a sixteen year-old neighbour girl, a war veteran, an insane politician, and a psychic prostitute.

i LOVE all the books you've put here, too!!! i second every single one of these!

  7. re-reading roald dahl's "tales of the unexpected". very dark and cheeky. if you like short stories- you should try this one.

also reading "sharp teeth" by toby barlow. i have to be honest and say i bought the book because of the very well designed book cover. i do that a lot*. but the book is interesting. a challenging read.

*last time i bought a book purely on the cover ended up being the REALLY enjoyable "the yiddish policeman's union" by michael chabon

  8. You can play WoW! or any other Blizzard game for that matter (cause those are the only ones that count!) lol =D

    yeah, but you'd be a n00b :P

OK, hate is a bit of a strong word. Yes, they do have a slick UI, and some nice features, but they will never be able to stack up against a top end PC, plain and simple. I think my disdain for Macs has more to do with the smug hipsters in L.A. who tout them as the greatest thing without any knowledge of what they are talking about.

the thing about macs is that any old idiot can use them straight out of the box. and i am any old idiot! they're just so straightforward and simple to use.

if you like being able to configure and add-on to your computer, then a mac is definitely not for you, i agree. there's a lot they cannot do. but for me? the mac is perfect. it does everything i want it to do. plus i don't have to worry about virii, really (i know that's a bone of contention with some pc users who insist i should have to worry...and NOW! but for the moment i feel pretty fancy-free. i use adblock, of course, but that's just for the eyesore potential).

  9. You can play WoW! or any other Blizzard game for that matter (cause those are the only ones that count!) lol =D

myself, i'm not a mmorpg game player (i play "cutesy" games like katamari damacy and little big planet. haha). the fiancee is a pc user and he likes games like "bioshock" and first-person shooters. i guess he's big on some game called "crysis"(?) right now

  10. The best printers we offered, and especially for designers, was Canon printers. For a few reasons, they do work very well with Macs, and if you get the one with multiple cartridges you save a LOT of money from printing. Cartridges is how you shop for a printer not so much the printer itself. Canon runs you about $15-$20 a cartridge and lasts about 100 photos in my experience. The printers themselves are around $100-$300 depending on the option you get.

    We use Canon MX7600.

It also has border-less printing! My favorite feature!

awesome :) thanks for the recommendation!

  11. lulz.... mac

:| you try to be an illustrator/designer without one!

I hate macs because they are touted as top of the line machines without the proper context. I don't like that you cannot upgrade them, nor do they run a vast majority of business and game software. I previously worked as an accountant at a production studio. It was always funny telling the graphic artists and producers that they submitted their invoices in an unfamiliar format, that they had to use a PC or else they wouldn't get paid

hate is a strong word, sir!

they are beautiful machines that are intuitive to use and have a nice interface.

i don't play video games (at least not on the computer), so that doesn't get me down and now microsoft's office suite has a mac version so the formatting is no problem anymore! B)

  12. lulz.... mac

:| you try to be an illustrator/designer without one!

you can always PM VJ member Tavoludo; he is the self-appointed MAC freak.

    thanks for the heads up!

I wish I could help but I'm still using W2K. SpiritAlight is a Mac user as are a few other folks here, I sure one of these nice people will point you in the right direction. If it helps, I've heard some of the newer HP and Canon units will work with a Mac but I don't know enough about it.

my folks (pc users) have an HP and it seems like a sturdy unit. i'll look into that, thanks!

  13. hulloooo.

trying to distract myself from news of a fellow vj-er being denied at montreal. :(

i am a mac user and i need a good reasonably priced printer/scanner.

it doesn't have to be fancy, but it's gotta work with a mac and last me a while.

anyone have any suggestions? any brands you recommend?

    thanks in advance.

  14. i don't understand? if they tell you you have an interview- even if someone misunderstood- they should give one to you asap. on principle. nobody ever gave me a date, so i can't really be angry but if i were you, varba, i'd be at my wits end too. i hope you can get in touch with someone who will listen.

me? i'm just going to sit and sigh. at least g wont be trying to drive here during the winter months now...

  15. Wasn't prepared for where this thread went. Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeez.

Tell me about it. I guess I shouldn't mention the fact that I'm dressing up as the Frito Bandito for Halloween. :bonk:

you can be an #### and say whatever you want, but i wont ever stand by and say nothing when i feel me or my people are being insulted. obviously you find this hilarious and that says a lot more about you than it does me. end of story.

  16. Is the Zorro costume racist then as espoused by you?

zorro is a hero figure. he defends people who cannot defend themselves. i fail to see how this is a negative stereotype or a stereotype at all of a spaniard.

and i would say i'm particularly sensitive to this subject. i am mexican-american and cajita indian.

my fiancee is haitian-canadian, walpole indian and scottish.

we would never think to dress up as another culture. especially in a disparaging way.

  17. I am a "witch" as in I am pagan, so the people with green skin and warts does bother me sometimes too because its mocking my religion, but that said its also a holiday where people dress up in many different things to have fun. Its like me yelling at people who dress up for Oktoberfest in Leiderhosen...Germans don't wear that, but I also don't care enough to try to call people out in a thread where they are just having fun. I doubt anyone is ever going to stop dressing up as a witch, or as a mariachi band, or as a sumo wrestler, a geisha, a ninja or any other of the many many costumes that could potentially be labeled as racist. She appologized in advance because shes not intending it to be racist, not because she is intending but doing it anyway. She also NOWHERE in that post said she thought this is the way mexicans dress. Why you are arguing it with adults? Because its silly to get so worked up over one day when people wear a bunch of stupid awesome costumes that pretty much anyone could take as offensive, when all they are ment for is having a bit of fun.

Oh and I do know the difference between witches and mexicans, just so you know. Im just saying theres a lot of people who get stereotyped on Halloween that you wouldn't think of, but thats no reason to jump on people in a thread, just ignore it next time if you can't deal with it.

i am dealing with it and letting you know it's not alright. end of. nothing more to say. i've said my piece. i come from a family who were very involved in the chicano civil rights movement and i was told to stand up for my people because most of the time no one else will. and they were right.

i do my best to not step on anyone's toes on halloween. i can come up with creative ideas to do this. it's not difficult.

  18. my hubby is Mexican.. I doubt he would be offended by someone dressing up as a Mexican...

ask him how he feels about it and then get back to me.

how is this any less insulting than blackface. its STEROTYPE. ITS NOT OKAY.

you have endless possibilities on halloween. why would someone intentionally pick something that would hurt someone's feelings and be racially inflammatory?

of all the costumes in the world, you pick that one? you pick another ethnic group to make fun of? think about that.

the poster already said they thought it might be racist. recognizing that does not make it right. apologizing in advance does not make it right when you know what you're doing.

stop being to ###### naive to the feelings of others and just avoid it altogether. it's never alright.
