My husband and I just recently got married. He is a F1 student and he is still a student. I’m an American citizen. We are working on our papers for AOS however we have not submitted it yet since we are waiting on some tax papers from our sponsor.
 
I was wondering if the order that Trump just passed will be a problem to this process. We are looking to submit everything as soon as possible.

If another few million people lose their jobs in the next month and the one after that, and the economy contracts by 20%+ as they predict in Q2, then it will be very hard to justify any work visas. USCIS will set the bar so high for any new or renewal that it will effectively stop them.
 
This economy is in free fall and when it finally lands, the backlash will concentrate on immigrants, foreigners,  and people of color as it has been over the centuries.
 
God help us all.

This is only me personally.  I realize there are people all over the spectrum when it comes to his policy.
 
I following his policy pretty close and this is the first time I've seen the potential to separate US Citizen's from wives, husbands, and children.

I filed my AOS from K-1 and tracking says it got there on March 23rd, so a month later and I haven't received the email confirmation or the letter or anything and now this. I followed all the rules and I know things are backed up right now , but it's scary not to know if I'm suddenly here illegally because the rules changed with no explanation or notice. 
 
I know some of you here are also in the middle of AOS (I am so so sorry for those stuck in the CR-1 or K-1 phase, the frustration and pain you must be feeling would destroy me) but is anyone else stuck in that first pre-step as well? How long did it take to even get a freaking notification that it was received if you filed since January? I filed form G-1145 and nothing

That's my logic! I am happy for forgo my 'employment authorisation' in my AOS for my K1 too, just want to be with my partner.

In the light of that, I think he is using this EO to attract more independents in his camp. So I can see how this can help him get re-elected. Immigration restriction is very popular among people across all parties. Since he is struggling to keep up with pandemic management, oil prices decline and economy, bringing immigration up will be the easiest solution to his declining rates.

I thought the executive order doesn’t need senate or congress approval? 
This is simply scapegoating but I’m afraid he could sign that as soon as they draft the order and whatever legal issues will be debated on thereafter and it’s gonna be one messy slow process. Absolutely childish move but not surprising from this administration.

I really implore everyone... Please calm down! We know nothing at this point. I have reason to be upset too. I had to delay my trip to Ukraine to accompany my fiancé on her k1 visa appointment because the Ukraine border closed. Then the embassy closed. Things were supposed to open up in a few weeks, and now this happened.  Nobody likes this. Nobody likes what covid-19 has done to our world and the extreme measures politicians have gone to in order to combat this. I think it’s ridiculous to think Trump has political motives for doing this though. Trump’s base loves him no matter what he does. This won’t make them vote for him more. I can’t imagine a single person saying “I used to hate Trump, but because he put temporary restrictions on immigration, I will vote for him now”
 
This move will make Trump lose votes, if anything. Unlike most politicians, he doesn’t weigh the political ramifications of every move he makes. This is why he is so frustrating to establishment politicians. He does stuff because he thinks it’s the right decision..
 
I completely disagree with this decision and it is really screwing up my life plans, but I am not going to be consumed by hate  and attribute evil motives to this (dumb) EO. Just because I don’t like this, doesn’t mean Trump did this for political reasons. It doesn’t mean the EO is illegal or unconstitutional.  You can get arrested for paddle boarding  or playing catch with your kid in some states. It is illegal to buy seeds for your garden or sit in your car in a church parking lot in other states. None of these rules make any sense to me. These are crazy times, and I don’t think it’s helpful to feed into the mass Hysteria going on. 
 
This too shall pass. God’s in charge.

agreed, I would bet like many of his other proposals, it will be "effective on this date unless you have an application postmarked ___". AKA send it in before he signs this 
me neither, He seems to be most people's 5th choice but this really put it into perspective for me tonight

just told my husband to vote for joe biden...he was not going to and was considering sitting out (he dislikes both candidates) but this is too much now. 

Well, I have been trying not to get political here but if you're potentially affected by this and you think voting for Trump is a good idea in November, it's like being a turkey voting for Thanksgiving.

does anyone know if he has the power to do this through executive order anyway? or will it be more like "temporarily suspending work visas only" etc 

I remember about a week or two ago i said on this group that i wouldn't put it past this administration to pull such a move. I remember someone saying my opinion wouldn't hold any weight. This is what i was talking about.
