  1. Just go take the test. Think I took my GC, Passport, SS number card and a letter from PNC with my name on it.

A monkey could pass the test, it was that easy. If the test center was anything like mine read up on it and see what they commonly fail people on before you go.

There are different rules for Residents and Non-Residents driving on foreign licences.

Here is the link to the documents you'll need to take: http://www.dot.state.pa.us/Public/DVSPubsForms/BDL/BDL Publications/pub 195nc.pdf

Scroll down you'll see the stuff you need for a K-1

I tried to Find it on PennDOT for you but all i could find was: ( It doesn't specify the difference between Non-Resident and Resident)

    5. Can I drive in Pennsylvania with my Foreign Driver's License?
Individuals who possess a valid foreign driver's license from their country are authorized to drive in Pennsylvania for up to one year from their date of entry into the United States, or upon expiration of their foreign license, whichever comes first. International driving permits are strongly recommended, but not required.

I think you can drive on a foreign licence for 60 days.

  2. Do a SAR on the Acro website. If his cert comes back with no live trace they will ask for the SAR anyway. If the SAR come back with nothing, happy days.

As far as 'lying' to get an ESTA I wouldn't worry about it. @Pooley man traveled on an ESTA after having some dealings with the law and they got their K1.

am I supposed to send my transcript for evaluation to knw where I qualify here or what should i do any advise pls

I needed to get my Bachelors evaluated for my job and they only accepted a translation form NACES.  https://www.naces.org/

You'll need to discuss it with HR or the School you're applying for to see what they would accept. If it's a two year diploma it may translate into an Associates Degree.

  4. Oh @Pooley tell him to apply for a discover secured credit card as soon as he gets his ssn and opens a regular bank account. I’ve only been here for 3 months and capital one have issued me with an unsecured card 3 days ago, delighted. So important that he starts to build his credit as soon as he can.

Oh and if you have any cards, add him on as a authorized user, they’ll be added to his report too.

  5. Did anyone that moved from the UK have trouble weaning themselves off of UK news? I love the BBC and still check it maybe 6 times a day.

I’m trying hard to transition to NBC for my news, but I feel disconnected from the stories and I don’t really like how it’s reported/written.

  6. Well hopefully, he might surprise you and feel comfortable right away.

One thing I don't miss from the UK is the drinking culture. Drinking after work, going for pub lunches and events with friend always revolved around drinking. I mean I like a beer, but not coming home smashed a couple of nights a week. I started work last week and no one has asked me out for a drink or even talked about going to a bar. I actually felt super relieved.

One thing I do hate about America on the other hand is Lip-Service - 'I worked 15 hours yesterday' - No you didn't

Where are you at in the US??

We stay in Monroeville in PA, about 15 miles from the City and my partners family are about a 30 minute drive south in Greensburg/Youngwood area.

Monroeville is nice for me, good mix of city and suburb.

  8. Tell him to bring an Orange Warburtons loaf! Dam this American bread gets old quick. I buy 'Artisan' bread but it ain't ever gonna be the same.

I've been here 3 months and love it. Weather is amazing, my job is amazing and our home is awesome. Not felt homesick yet and I come from the big smoke.

Tell him to embrace what Americans do and he'll fit right in. Every other day I'm either on a quad, a side by side, in the pool or out fishing with or without boat, sitting around a firepit or cooking on the bbq. How often would I do those things in the UK? Never! Well maybe the BBQ.  My partners family have been incredible and they've taken me under their wing. Without my partners family helping me integrate it would've been alot harder.

Do I have to fill in the employment permission form as well?

No your visa is your work authorization

But it is asking about my parents ssn? They aren’t in the us. It doesn’t ask about my husband’s ssn?

You will be required to complete your parents names on there. Obviously you cant enter their ssn

  10. File form SS-5

All I took was my passport and birth certificate.

Why hasn't it come yet? Who knows, it'll be in the government processing blackhole.

Top tip, If they cant find you and you have a middle name (a name that is not part of your forname) ask them to search for you on the database with all your middle names included with your first name

Also dont be surprised if they turn their nose up at your  visa in your passport and demand you need the plastic green card. Just be firm with them and tell them this is your visa.

  11. Fact is when you marry someone you're marrying into the family.

I would never confront a group about something I found offensive if I was out numbered, pack mentality and all that. I would shrug it off and limit my time with them from then on.

Just pay close attention to your relationship with your partner, families drive couples apart.

If your family want to meet your inlaws explain to your family the situation and limit their time with them. Surly your inlaws ain't going to be outwardly obscene/racist the first time they meet them.

  12. How old was he when the crime was committed? 17? Only one offence?

Even if it's a CIMT it would fall under the exemption clause if below applies.

    INA 212 states:

    (ii) Exception

Clause (i)(I) shall not apply to an alien who committed only one crime if-

    (I) the crime was committed when the alien was under 18 years of age, and the crime was committed (and the alien released from any confinement to a prison or correctional institution imposed for the crime) more than 5 years before the date of application for a visa or other documentation and the date of application for admission to the United States, or

Not so fast there, cowboy (sorry couldn't resist from seeing the profile pic)....

-try looking up the contact details for the HR department on Google?

-old P60 forms/UK tax filings would have contact mailing addresses for the company?  Might give you *something* to work with.

-if no way to get email/phone number, but you can figure out the mailing address...ask for a record of employment letter?

Just trying to think off the top of my head here....don't give up yet!!

I've googled my ### off and no contact details for the HR department. It's a big government department well one of the big 4, I dont want to disclose where I worked on a public forum.

I even tried contacting the call centre 3 times (thought one of the 3 different people might tell me) related to the department and each time they couldn't tell me as they were unable to determine if it was a breach of security. Even spoke to a supervisor, no dice.

Old p60? All of them were electronic, I never got them before I left.

Now, HMRC might be a shout, I know I can request a Statement of Earnings from them. That would show my complete employment history with dates and pay. I'll need to call them.

  14. Well last week I was offered a job with a government department in PA.

Turns out my 4+ years in my last position is not considered enough and they want 10 years employment history.

They have been in contact with my previous employer and my 4 years service has been confirmed.

I worked in the UK for 2 different UK government departments in the last 10 years. Problem is I cannot get in touch with my employer from 4 years ago. I went as far as trying to contact old work colleagues via facebook to find out if they still work there to provide me a contact number/email for HR

If anyone has worked for the UK government you know there is no face to the organisation, no 'reception'

Absolutely gutted. I'll need to withdraw the application.

It's his grandmother. No route to an immigrant visa for her. Unless he brings his mother/father, she/he then becomes a USC and petitions her/his mother. Given the advanced years of the grandmother, there may not be enough years left to do that.

What a pie. Thanks for correcting me. I thought it was his mum.

No sausage?! Em that’s just biscuits with a sauce no?

Well I’ve made it again a couple of times so I think I like it. Will definitely make it for my family when they come over. Confuse them.

I really hope so. She was super mean to him but they kept his passport too

They kept his passport? That’s gotta be a positive? Why would they keep the passport? Only because they’re considered issuing him a visa. I’d take a massive positive away from that
