The previous answer applies if you're already in Canada. If you're flying in from out of country, you do still have to quarantine. My husband was visiting me in the U.S. He had to return, quarantine for two weeks, then do his medical, and will fly to Montreal (no quarantine) for his interview (Monday).

no quarantine to go to Montreal. Quarantine upon your return is based on your province.

    Consulate Process - Montreal IR1

My appointment was scheduled for 8:45am. I arrived at 8:41am and was let in by the security guard. He asked me a series of Covid related questions and then asked me to wait until the person ahead of me was through security before moving through security. It was standard airport security, I didn’t use the lockers. I was directed to take the elevator to the 1st floor. Once I arrived I went immediately to window 5 to provide my passport and then told to sit and wait until my name was called.

There was 12 people in chairs when I first got there. At one point there were 18 of us and no longer any open seats (socially distancing considerations in mind). I think a lot of people had to wait well beyond their interview time to be let in by security downstairs because of that.  It also seemed like most people spent considerably more time being interview. The woman who arrived just ahead of me must have been at the window for 20 minutes when it was her turn to interview. They seemed to be really, really behind schedule. I think at least 7 of 12 windows were operational as people were called to windows 1-7.

I had a lot of time to wait because I wasn’t called up to provide my documents until 9:45. I was called to window 6, asked to provide my original birth certificate (I provided the Ontario long form), original marriage certificate (I provided Ontario short form) and police certificates. My police certificate was new (August 2020), it said Privacy Act Other. I also had a foreign police certificate and translation.  Next they asked if any of our financial information had changed. My husband got a new job, so I provided a new I-864. He asked for the 2019 Tax Return to accompany it. I had the full return with all schedules (over 50 pages) but he only wanted the 1040. He did not want any income slips (1099 series and W2s).  Any documents that were new the officer put a sticky note that said *scan* on them. I was then asked for one photo (2inch x 2inch) he scanned it and then gave it back to me. Next was finger printing on the electronic reader. I was then told to have a seat and wait to be called up. This all took about 10 minutes. 5 minutes later I was called up to the same window again, and he explained he forgot to give me the domestic violence pamphlet. I sat back down and read it.

I then waited until 1030am to be called to my interview window. It was window #2 and the woman was extremely nice. I used the hook to the left on the window to hang my coat.  She asked if I was from Texas because of the necklace I was wearing. I explained that my husband was. She then asked me to swear my oath and took one set of finger prints as my oath. I was asked:
when did you met your husband?  Did you start dating right away? When did you start dating?  What year did you get married?  When was the last time you were able to see him? (She was surprised he could come to Canada - I noted the changes to rules to allow it)  What does your husband do for work?  Have you ever committed a crime anywhere?  Have you ever stayed in the US longer than you were allowed?  Conversationally she asked about my foreign police certificate and why I had it (I lived there 8 months - previous NVC guidance indicated you’d need it). She thanked me for providing it.  Did I have a nexus card? ( I didn’t have to provide it she simply said “thought so” after I answered Yes so I assume they had some extra info about me because of that)
At some point she returned my original birth certificate and marriage certificate - don’t remember when.

She then told me I was her easy case of the day and she would be able to approve my visa, and I exhaled and said that I’d be very happy to be that for her. She laughed.  I got my white Welcome to the US letter and a document outlining how to check the status of my visa.  She said to expect 2-3 weeks for delivery.  She asked if I had any questions and then I went on my way. It took all of 5 minutes with her, I think she had already told me I was approved by minute 3.   I was outside the consulate by 1038.

So thankful for that step to be over.  I’ll let you all know when I receive my passport. Thanks to everyone for the support during this long wait -  DQ Jan 2020, PD Nov 2018.

It’s going to be okay. I just prepared for my interview so I can give you some numbers. In 2020, I have spent 125 days visiting in the U.S. one trip was 72 days that other trip was 53 days.  In 2019, I spent 99 days in the U.S with split across 5 trip.  I filed my petition in Nov 2018, so all of those trips were while I’ve been in this process.  In addition, I was unemployed and didn’t own or rent a house for at least 5 of those trips.  For several for those I didn’t have or a return ticket or crossed by land. All those things indicate it *could* have been difficult for me, but it never was. I was pulled into secondary once and had to explain my ties to Canada - it was scary but they were nice and I didn’t take much to explain what I’d do on the trip and when I’d be back.

Our immigration status hasn’t stopped me from traveling to visit, I just prepare differently. Have proof of ties and intent to return, and make sure your husband is prepared to explain the situation calmly and make a clear case that he will return. In all likelihood, the only questions he will be asked are where are you going (city, state), why are you going there (to visit my wife), how long do you plan to stay (insert time). How much luggage do you have (less luggage is a good indicator to them that you aren’t planning to stay).  Okay, have a nice day - hands passport back.

It is going to be okay.

My husbands appt was at 10:15 and we got there at 10:11.
Security check and then my husband handed his passport and waited 40 min to go up to the window to give his original documents.
They asked for his birth certificate, marriage certificate, police clearances, work permit (my husband is a temporary worker). The police clearance with “other” was accepted.

After another 10-15 min, he was called up to the window for his interview.
He was asked: how did we meet, describe your relationship before the wedding, when was the wedding, how many people  attended the wedding, have you been to the US, what I did for a living, where he will be staying once he moves back and status in Canada. My husband lived in the US before so he was asked what he studied and specialized in.
At the end he was told that the visa was approved. 🥳

Also, as an aside: the security guy was really nice. He came out and spoke to me very kindly because I was standing outside.

we stayed at the residence inn Montreal downtown. Less than a 5 min walk to the consulate.

there is an aritzia across the street and the second floor looks into the consulate. So I shopped and glanced over a few times 😬

Holy macaroni, this process has strained my finances as it is and now another few hundred for medical lol.  Oh well, dirty old money anyway right, and *sometime* in the next year we should be able to stop paying both mortgage and rent 😛

TECH PEOPLE, BE LESS BAD.  I say this as a tech person.  I've had problems with online forms not recognizing me before until I realized that for some reason at signup there was a trailing space in my email, so my login was "mypersonal at email dot com space" lol.  Strip the spaces tech people, and don't tell me after filling in a form that I need to put my phone number in a certain format with dashes and parentheses or whatever when you can do it for me, plus you're probably storing it as 1112223333 anyway so stop that!  lol end rant

First things first. Congratulations to all who received IL today! This was exciting news to wake up to at 3:30am (I am having trouble sleeping after my surgery).

As to this projection, I am also (quietly) thinking the same, however not keeping my hopes too high (because they did schedule a lot of CR1/IR1s in September and then we heard nothing for 2 month). I am also pretty concerned about surge in COVID cases and what it can mean for us. Praying with all my heart that nothing crazy will happen again. I just want to be able to live with my husband hopefully sooner than later...

Finally a tracking number! This has been a testing process. Pretty sure the embassy lost my wife's original fingerprints. They asked her to fly back to Montreal literally for 15 minutes to redo her right hand.

Glad it's almost over. Good luck to all of those still waiting. it will end soon and end well.
