Not sure exactly what you are asking here. But based on what you said, here is some feedback.
1. You will be filing under the 5-year option, so in theory, USCIS should not care about the state of your marriage, but sometimes they do ask.
2. Owing back taxes will not prevent you from getting citizenship as long as you have a plan/agreement WITH the IRS to pay what is owed. You don't have to pay it all back before applying for citizenship, but there needs to be a written agreement - they will want to see it.
3. I don't know of any financial assistance with paying for immigration costs. I'm afraid you will just have to find the money - or borrow it.
4. It seems like you are trying to secure citizenship so that you can come and go between the US and Mexico as you please. Nothing wrong with that ... BUT ...because of your financial and living situation now, be careful of spending too much time there now, as you may be suspected of abandoning your residency.

It's only been 11 days .. and two of those were holidays. You'll probably receive the RFE by the end of this week. Then just send them whatever it is they ask for. No worries.

I do not think that officer's action/behavior was wrong because- (1) one can not expect every officer to be kind, professional, humble and to be the one we prefer him/her to be. Keep it remember that each person is different and his/her modus operandi differs too. So can't and shouldn't blame the officer if he was different than "typical' officers that we hear on here by others who have gone to their interview; (2) OP did make so many statements to the officer which would have made anyone to be suspicious on the OP's marriage, and do not forget that OP must have received green card or must have filed her citizenship application based on marrying to a US citizen. So obviously, officer has all the right to grill her and suspect her if something does seem fishy. I'm not an officer not an attorney, but given OP's statements I myself doubt on OP's marriage. For example- there is nothing wrong to file a tax return separately despite of being happily married but parties can not expect everything to be in their nest. In OP's case, they haven't filed tax returned together as jointly because her husband is claimed as a dependent on her parents' returns. Tax returns are very important documents when it comes to immigration, but in OP's situation- they want to keep everything in their favor. They want her husband to be kept claimed as a dependent on his parents' tax returns and they also expect immigration to not be suspicious on their situation?? They want to expect everything in their favor.
VenusAngel, I'm very sorry to hear about your experience and hope that it gets sorted out soon. It is within the bounds of the IO to request further evidence, especially in the light of not filing joint returns which is apparently the holy grail of immigration. Hopefully you'll either get an oath update or a RFE soon and can move on to the next step - whichever it is. For now, at least you know that nothing has changed, and your permanent residency is still valid. That's the one saving grace of the citizenship process.
Wilerao .. sorry, but you are wrong. Yes, I can fully expect that EVERY USCIS officer and in fact EVERY PERSON should be kind, professional and humble. I refuse to expect or accept rudeness and crassness in anyone. I don't read where VenusAngel made "so many statements" which would lead anyone to believe her marriage to be false, and it is not up to you to define the terms of their marriage or relationship with family.

I wouldn't show up in a t-shirt, jeans, or running shoes, but I wouldn't over-dress either. You should be fine with business casual, or even a step up from that. And I do believe that anyone working at USCIS in Chicago will completely understand the weather. Remember, this is still an 'interview'. Pants, shirt, sweater combo should be fine. Wear something that you are going to be comfortable and confident in too. Good luck!

I'm not sure what "PD" means, but if you mean that that is your filing date, then I would suggest that you find the September Filers thread (it should be on page 1 or 2 of this forum) add your name to the list there and try to find folks who submitted their apps the same time as you. You can also look in the August and October filers for people who are also waiting on interviews/results from Chicago.

I think you should get a lawyer now. You need to start putting things in place in case deportation proceedings are started against you.

It doesn't matter what you think really. All that matters in this case is how USCIS sees it. And regardless of what they failed to do, you also failed to follow the letter of the law. It's a mess. Get a lawyer.

You are lucky that you have the option to refile through your wife. But.. lawyers are like doctors. Always go for a second, or even third opinion.

In your case, I would strongly suggest that you hire a COMPETENT lawyer. Not only should it be appealed but you may have to put stuff in place now to ensure that you aren't deported. I don't mean to scare you but if what they are saying is you are not holding a valid green card then you could have some work ahead of you. Hire a lawyer and check his/her references.

I don't know about the best number, sionnach, but if I were you, I'd look at the August, September and October filers threads and see if there is anyone on there who have also filed in San Jose. Perhaps they can give you better advice on what to expect.

Good thing I checked in. I completely forgot about the tax transcripts until now, lol. Guess I should go read that letter to see what else they need. I know I technically shouldn't need them but I've heard of folks filing under the 5-year rule who have been asked to prove marital standing etc.

When I did my biometrics they were out of books and CDs. You can download it from the USCIS website though. No different and saves the paper

There may be another option ... does the form allow for a different mailing address? Could you use your work address as a mailing address and then have someone at work (your boss, your secretary) receive the mail for you?

Based on the information you have provided, I would say no.. no lawyer needed. You will be filing under the 5-year option, which does not require any proof of an ongoing relationship etc. I THINK you will need a copy of your divorce paperwork though. So my advice is also to stop worrying, which I know is pretty much impossible.

Sorry that you are experiencing these delays.
But this is EXACTLY why it's so important that VJ members take the time to complete their timelines. It's not enough to read the forums, ask and even give advice. The timelines are what you can do to leave a little capsule of your experience so that those coming after us will know what to expect .... even after we are long gone on our own After-VJ-Journeys.
