  1. As a surviving spouse, you are entitled to request an original death certificate.  You can do so online - go here: https://www.vitalchek.com/order_main.aspx?eventtype=DEATH and select the state where your wife passed away.  Depending on the state you may need to upload a copy of your marriage certificate and a copy of your ID, to prove that you are the surviving spouse.

where I'm from you can still go on an the american passport and then get your home countrys passport updated when you are home.

But that's not true everywhere.  Many countries have an equivalent to the US law that requires citizens to enter and exit on that country's passport.

Also, the OP needs a US passport for international travel regardless of whether she must use her home country's passport to enter there.  She wouldn't be able to re-enter the US without a US passport, because as a USC she's ineligible for either a visa or ESTA.

Since you are a USC you should be travelling on an american passport in and out of the US.

Why don't you have or get an american passport?

If the OP has dual citizenship with the US and the country to which she is traveling, she needs to enter and exit each country on that country's passport. Example: I'm a dual US/UK citizen, so I would need to exit the US on my US passport then enter the UK on my UK passport.

N-400 currently pending.  Like clockwork, I used to get an email twice a month saying "We are still reviewing your case/no action required".  Those emails stopped last month.  Does that mean something?

Not necessarily.  In the almost-year between filing my N-400 and my interview date, my notifications paused and restarted several times for no apparent reason.  They were regular from mid-June until 8/6/18, then I got nothing until 9/27/18 after which they were regular again for a couple of months until 12/6 when they apparently took a long Christmukkah vacation, because they didn't reappear until 1/31.  Same thing again between 3/14 and 4/25.  I got "we are still reviewing your case" as usual on 4/25, then the "we have taken an action on your case" notice signalling that my interview had been scheduled on 5/7... followed on 5/20 by a return to "we are still reviewing your case" 🙄

TBH, I think the gaps signify either that their email system is overloaded or that someone somewhere forgot to push a button.

Could you find out the frequency of oath ceremony @ Baltimore?  May be no ceremony is scheduled yet?

Based on the timing of my ceremony and the ceremonies of other VJers who interviewed in Baltimore on the same day as I did, Baltimore field office holds ceremonies one or two days per week, and there may be one or two ceremonies on a given day.  They schedule 40-50 people per ceremony.  There are also two to three judicial ceremonies per month, held in the courts at Baltimore and Greenbelt, and one Baltimore filer had his ceremony in Frederick.  So, ceremonies are pretty frequent.

No. It is exactly what they said - a recommendation for approval. Barring something coming up during final review, checks, and/or supervisory review, I would expect an approval. But it's not approved yet. An RFE or denial is still possible if they were to discover an inadmissibility before approval.

The only two outcomes listed on the N-652 are "Congratulations!  Your application has been recommended for approval." and "A decision cannot yet be made about your application."  There isn't a "Congratulations, your application has been approved." option.

That's because, as @geowrian said, the interview is followed by a final review.  Specifically, per the USCIS policy manual:

    Quote

If an officer approves a naturalization application, the application goes through the appropriate internal procedures before the USCIS office schedules the applicant to appear at a ceremony for the administration of the Oath of Allegiance. [2] The internal procedures include a “re-verification” procedure where all approved applications are reviewed for quality. The officer who conducts the re-verification is not the same officer who conducts the interview. While the officer conducting the re-verification process does not adjudicate the application once again, the officer may raise any substantive eligibility issues.

USCIS does not schedule an applicant for the Oath of Allegiance in cases where USCIS receives or identifies potentially disqualifying information about the applicant after approval of his or her application. [3] If USCIS cannot resolve the disqualifying information and the adjudicating officer finds the applicant ineligible for naturalization, USCIS then issues a motion to reopen and re-adjudicates the naturalization application.

Generally, though, a "recommended for approval" result swiftly turns into an approval.  In my case, I think that had happened before I got out of the parking lot.  (Admittedly, I had been sitting in my car for 20 minutes texting a close-up of the "Congratulations!" checkbox to all and sundry 😆)

I only say it’s moving fast due to the estimated completion date of December 2019.  Everyone that filed similar times to me have much longer estimates on completion date.  Any other documents that I might of missed?

The Norfolk, VA field office processes N-400 relatively quickly.  The official USCIS processing estimate is 9 to 13 months, whereas for Baltimore it's currently 13 to 25.  Recent VJ timelines suggest you might be done quite a bit faster than that - looks like interview dates have been about 4 months after filing

Your documents list looks good.  I suspect that what will actually happen is that they'll recognize that you're eligible under the five-year rule and interview you on that basis anyway, so you don't really need to worry about proving that you're still in a bona-fide marriage.  You'd still need to provide the marriage certificate, tax transcripts and copies of your GC, but my guess is that they're not going to look at the bank statements or mortgage.

  9. You're right, you qualify for both options -- and therefore you should definitely select A 😃. Filing under B shouldn't cause you any problems, though.

Filing after only 3 years instead of 5 is a "perk" of being married to a US citizen, but to take advantage of it you need to submit evidence with the application proving that you've been in a bona-fide marriage to a US citizen for the past three years, a bit like a mini-ROC.  Applying under the 5-year rule is much more straightforward.

Hi everyone, so here I am, not even in the USA yet and already thinking about (worrying) the US citizenship. I'm sorry if this was already asked, but I wasn't able to find what I need on this forum or www.uscis.gov. What are the conditions on dual citizenship? I know I still have a long way to go before I can even qualify to become a US citizen, but I would just like to know.

Your profile says Netherlands, but your post title asks about dual US/Czech Republic citizenship.  As others have said, the US permits dual/multiple citizenship, but some other countries do not.  The Czech Republic has permitted dual citizenship since 2014 - see this page on the Czech consulate website for details.  If you're a Czech citizen, you will not automatically lose Czech citizenship when you (eventually) become a US citizen.  The Netherlands only permits dual citizenship in specific circumstances, and in general Dutch citizenship is automatically lost if you voluntarily take another nationality, but here's one of the examples of exceptions to that rule given in the factsheet on the Dutch government website:

    3. The Dutch citizen is a husband, wife or registered partner who voluntarily takes the nationality of the marriage partner. This situation pertains to a Dutch citizen who has a husband, wife or registered partner with that other nationality on the day of taking that nationality.
Example: Rose has Dutch nationality. She is married to Felix who has Brazilian nationality. Rose applies for and is granted Brazilian nationality. Rose remains a Dutch citizen because she is taking the nationality of her husband.

If you're strongly concerned about retaining Dutch citizenship, perhaps when the time comes it would be worth having a one-time consultation with a Dutch attorney before deciding whether to apply for US citizenship.

Hi All, have a question here. Got my N-400 interview next month, however, the time is at 1:00 PM. Could I come to the field office in the early morning? Or I have to stick to the arranged time? Thanks.

You have to stick to the scheduled time.  Your appointment notice might even specify how far in advance of the scheduled appointment you may arrive, because waiting room space is limited.

Hi! I've recently sent the evidence requested to the Potomac Center in Arlington, VA. When I tracked the package on UPS, it said it got delivered to Capitol Heights, MD. Any idea why this might be?

Security screening.  Various federal agencies in the DC area have their packages screened for dangerous substances, explosives etc at a screening facility in Capitol Heights.  It adds a few days to the expected delivery date (and don't expect the delivery status to update when they actually do deliver it to USCIS, either.  It might, but it's just as likely not to.)

Any ideas what they look for in the tax document?

In my case. we made a minor error on our 2018 return and got a notice from the IRS asking for more information.  We replied with a letter explaining that it was a mistake, calculated the extra tax we owed (only $100-ish), paid it online and enclosed a copy of the receipt with our letter.  Because of all that, there was no 2018 tax transcript available by the date of my interview, because the IRS hadn't had time to close the file.  So, when the IO asked me whether we owed any outstanding taxes, I said "well, I don't think so, but here's what happened..." and pulled out a copy of what we had sent to the IRS.

tl;dr?  They want to know that you file and pay your taxes responsibly, which indicates "good moral character".  Also, (if you're applying under the 3-year rule) they want to see that you and your spouse file as married.

A question, I have pending I-751 and N-400 and submitted in July 2018( N-400) in Baltimore, MD.

After the N-400 submission till interview date, I have additional evidence. I have a 4 big folders.

My 1st question is : Is they allow big bag or small luggage to carry in the interview area?

I brought a well-stuffed 3"-thick binder to my N-400 interview in Baltimore last month, carried in a tote bag.  No-one had a problem with that.  However...the IO looked at precisely one thing (our 2018 tax documents) from that file.  We brought roughly twice as much to my AOS interview four years ago, and the IO looked at almost none of that either.  I totally understand the urge to bring every possible scrap of evidence you've painstakingly gathered over the past few years, but unless you have some major red flags I can promise you that you don't need to bring everything you have in those 4 big folders, and the poor overworked IO definitely doesn't need to see most of it, even for a combo interview.

  17. The Tax Return Transcript is sufficient, but the Record of Account Transcript provides more information.  It combines the Tax Return Transcript and the Account Transcript, i.e. it shows the details of your most recent tax return, plus any changes made after the return was filed.  So, a Record of Account Transcript will show that you filed your return, that you paid the tax due (if any), and that either there have been no changes since filing or that there were changes and you have paid whatever additional tax was found to be due (or not paid it - in which case, be prepared to show that you have a payment plan in place).

The other thing is, if you worry about this kind of thing, do you have will? If you don't, you should get a will. If you do it with an attorney, I would make a copy of all of that stuff and give it to the attorney to be given to your next-of-kin along with the will, if you want. If you can't afford or don't want attorney and your estate is small, you can do a will by yourself, just get off the internet. I think as long as it has date, signed by you and witnessed, it's a valid will in most states. Then open a safe deposit box (very cheap, $30-$40/year) and put all that stuff in. Make sure your older kid know where that box is and/or have access to it along with the will

Good advice, except for the part about the safe deposit box.  To have continued access to the safe deposit box after the OP's death (without having been formally appointed as executor/personal representative of the estate, which cannot happen until the original will has been filed with the court), her older kid would have to be a co-owner of the box.  The law varies from state to state, but in general, if there is no surviving co-owner of the safe deposit box in which the will is believed to be kept, a court order must be obtained before the box can be opened.  At best, that's a time-consuming burden during an already difficult period.  Worse, if the family doesn't have/can't find the key to the safe deposit box, the bank will be required to drill it open - and then the deceased's estate will have to reimburse the bank for the cost of the destroyed box, which is not cheap.  (I'm not an attorney, but I work for a law firm and this is the advice our estate planning attorneys give after every will-signing).

Our online case now shows September 2020 as our estimated timeframe.  A little hard to take when I've just seen that some March 2019 filers are recently being assigned interview dates in August. I'm happy for them; just wish the Baltimore office wasn't so backed up. Oh well...not gonna complain, just gonna keep hoping all goes smoothly. At the end of the day, we're grateful she has her 10yr card and we have a good life. :)

My online account shows an estimated completion date of December 2019.  My oath ceremony was 8 days ago.  🙄😆.  Baltimore has been averaging roughly 12 months from application to oath for the past year or so, and that might even improve now that they're transferring a portion of cases to other offices in an effort to reduce the backlog.

I sympathize with the frustration of seeing applicants from Ohio and Indiana get interview dates when your own is nowhere in sight.  I just kept reminding myself that that could have been me - but then I'd have had to live in Ohio...  😄

Good luck! Please do keep us posted on your interview. I am especially interested in which documents are asked for. Like State DL? Rental agreements? Tax?

The IO asked for my GC and passport, and I think I showed my DL either at Security or when I checked in.  I wasn't asked for any other documents at the interview -- but I had a three-inch-thick binder full of everything I'd uploaded with the original application, just in case they wanted to see any of it.

I wasn't asked for tax documents, but I provided some at the interview anyway.  (I had uploaded tax transcripts for 2015-2017 with my application.)   The IO asked whether I owed any unpaid taxes and I explained that a 2018 tax transcript wasn't yet available because we made a minor error on our 2018 return and got the IRS equivalent of an RFE 😄 .  I had brought copies of the IRS notice and our response (sent within a couple of days of receiving the notice), including a letter admitting the error, a calculation of the extra tax we owed (only about $100), the additional schedule to our tax return and a printout of the online payment we made via the IRS Direct Pay webpage, showing that we had paid everything we owed.  She scanned all 8 pages and added them to my file.

Congratulations..my interview is on june 27th in baltimore.you mentioned in your post that system randomly selects question so do we have to respond verbly or how does that work??

The questions are randomly selected by the computer system and displayed to the interviewing officer on his or her computer screen, which you cannot see.  The officer reads a question to you, you answer verbally, and the officer types your answer into the computer then moves on to the next question.   As soon as you have given six correct answers the officer will tell you that you have passed the test.

  22. If you gave them your cellphone number, you'll get texts at every stage of the process.  Mine was straightforward other than the fact that my UK passport had been expired for about five years, and the photo I uploaded was taken with my cellphone by a co-worker.  No problems or hitches at all.  The period between filling out the application online and actually getting it to the Post Office was longer than the period from mailing it to getting the new passport.  The UKPA is astonishingly efficient.
