  1. Here is the thing: To apply for your SS without having your green card first, you need to apply in your maiden name. The reason is that you need something to back up the name you file under. For your married name, only a green card is going to back you up, which means no SS for you until you get your green card.

    To get your SS number without a green card, you need to apply under your maiden name because the only thing that will back you up then is your I-94 arrival record. To do this, first of all it must be your real name and it must be in the first 75 days after your arrival.

    the marriage certificate is sufficient proof of name change, as long as there is still more than 2 weeks validity left on the I-94.

    some SSA officers are less competent than others and may not be willing to issue an SSN to a K1 in the new married name based on the marriage cert, but that is a different matter. in that case, you might want to speak to the officer's supervisor, or try a different office entirely.

    if someone missed the 90 days less 2 weeks period to apply for the SSN, they can apply in married name once they receive the EAD. no need to wait for the green card at all.

  2. so frustrated :( documents supposed to be sent to escrow today. no idea of underwriter approved the loan or if he needs anything else from us and how long it will take to get those documents. loan officer completely unreachable, voicemail full. yesterday she promised to have an ETA on closing date, closing costs (we don't have time to do a wire transfer, so we need to get a cashier's check in advance), etc but she never got back to us despite many reminders and phonecalls. big surprise...

    oh, i called corporate out of desperation. tried to find out who [did not mean to put her name here, sorry] supervisor/branch manager is. couldn't get a straight answer. instead, got transferred to another loan officer who about an hour and a half ago promised to get us a call back "asap". so i called a random branch manager listed on the website (the only one who picked up his phone - the rest had no option for voicemail, just an option to speak to reception) and he is based out of a different office and "promised" to look into this and get us a call back. yeah, sure. i'll believe it when it happens.

    i am driving myself nuts. need to find some kind of distraction. / rant

  3. i think in the US, there are merits to being a single mom on paper lol. i had a client who referred to the man who came with her as her husband, and more than once has told us he's the kid's dad. but because i did the billing, i know the feds have her down as a single mom and only her income/work hours are taken into account. she pays $15/mth for full time childcare and the guy drives a bmw lol.

  4. eh - my singaporean buddies had similar problems, polizi/si were useful. JB? I went up on three weekends with 3 different sets of friends, so it's quite possible to get it done. Sure, ya gotta pay a gratuity to the cops, but for my friends, it was useful.

    not sure when your friends tried that, but anti-singaporean sentiment amongst malaysian police is quite well-known these days. it could easily backfire against you if you get them involved.

  5. it is normal when you have rose colored blinders on and can't see that someone is manipulating you for their own gain.

    my mom has no way of getting there on her own. she is not well, and my dad is getting old too, he often loses his way navigating on malaysian roads. we got him a gps with malaysian maps but he refuses to use it. the only way will be for me to go with her once i'm back, we can take a taxi from our home to the terminal in johor, then get a local cab from there. doubt we will enlist the help of the polisi, they are unlikely to want to help singaporeans who are buying up all their local property and raising real estate prices.


    Alas, he does care.

  6. btw, my mom is selling her condo in malaysia that she has been renting out for almost a decade, and agreed to rent the unit out to the buyer before closing, just like you suggested. usually my mom gets $650/mth for the unit. the buyer "rented" it from my mom at $100/mth (usually she rents it out for $650, not sure why my mom agreed to go as low as $100 - probably just my mom being too trusting) supposedly for renovation work. a few months ago, the maintenance office lady called my mom to let her know that the buyer has been renting the condo out to two families (two bedrooms, so one each) at $700/mth total. and the sale has dragged on 4 months, and my mom has not seen a single cent of rent money yet. so she has been bugging the lawyer, and suddenly, the lawyer is now saying he needs the title to another property my mom holds, but cannot cite a reason for it. very shady guy. :\

    wish my mom had someone to go with her to malaysia and help her deal with the tenants, the buyer, and the lawyer in person. she is too nice, and an easy target for people who want to take advantage of others like her.


    the good thing is, the lady put down a hefty earnest money deposit. so if all else fails, my mom does have that to fall back on.

  7. since timing and calendar is an issue,

    I suggest you talk with the seller directly,

    and inquire if you can temporarily stay there prior to the actual closing.

    This is done often in Texas - a temporary lease (of sorts) document added to the pile. If for a week to two weeks, sometimes this is a free bonus, even the seller paying for the utilities. But it must be negotiated, and I sense this wasn't even a topic for discussion.

    I've been watching your posts about this - I still not see any mention of YOU actually signing any documents, and that bothers me. Sure, it's difficult for a recent immigrant to have a high-enough credit score to chase after a mortgage - that's why I'm a fan of a private seller-financed-mortgage - where the final loan decision is made with the seller - not any mortgage company. Sure, it's rare, but the hassle is reduced.

    yeah, that is common in singapore as well. i asked the real estate agent about that possibility back in march, but since the seller is a bank, we can't do that. they are not willing to rent it to us either.

    i have signed a few documents. the loan is in jonas' name only so that we can get a better interest rate, i am on the title though.

  8. My lawyer did not want us to apply for AP because she said we needed a specific reason for why we were traveling. We filed for AOS and EAD about a month ago, my question is would we be able to apply for AP still- would it cost money and could/should we do it on our own? We really want to visit family outside of the US in December and we may not have GC by then.. Thanks for your feedback

    Your lawyer is incorrect. You can still apply for AP and get the fee waived by sending in a copy of the I-485 acceptance notice (the NOA-1) together with your AP application.

  9. so, the house loan has been sent to the underwriter, and we were assured documents would be sent to escrow by wednesday. i don't know whether to have faith in anything my loan officer says anymore, so all i can do is hope and pray it works out. our lease ends on saturday. i have no idea what kind of timeframe we're looking at, i did look at some real estate forums and compared timelines but they are all so different. as far as i can tell, no one has gone from underwriting to closing in under a week though. :( and in the homebuyer's class jonas went to, they said keys will not be exchanged at closing, the funds have to be held overnight before the keys can be handed over. feel like i'm growing a year older with every day that passes and i don't hear from the loan officer.
