It's very country/consulate specific. Go to the immigration timelines and use the country filter for your country for K1.

i don't know if it's pretentious or if they're just mystified. I know, after my 14-month journey to get here, get married, and get a greencard, the first order of business is not going to be "Ok, let's see if we can move back to Canada, now."

I don't think that's quite correct. If you apply for EAD at the SAME TIME as AOS, then it's good for a year (or until you get the greencard). If you apply for it on its own (without/before AOS) it's only good for as long as your I94 is valid, which is about as long as it takes to get it. So you pay for it separately, and then might get to use it for a couple of weeks only before I94 expires.

Sorry to hear about all of that, it does sound like a very bad situation.

Something's got to change, for sure. A lot's got to change, really. Removing conditions on your GC doesn't mean you have to stay. You can leave at any time, so if I were you I would make that decision separately from the immigration aspect of it. I know it's a bit more money if you file it, but I think if you let that be the pressure you will be more unhappy, with time ticking away.
Can you get the police to come and evict the brother or get the parents to intervene and get him out? That sounds awful.
Can you move to another state/town where people are more worldly and there are more job opportunities?
It sounds like your husband isn't good with money, and even those past decisions are coming back now, like him choosing the cheapy insurance that later gets him in trouble.

I feel really bad for immigrants to move to backwater/provincial places. I have a lot of respect for people who can move to those places and make it okay. I just hear so many stories from people about how their neighbors are rude to them and it just makes me so sad. Just to clarify - I was under the impression that you only needed to submit a full-fingerprint version IF you were convicted of a crime in Canada. If you have not and a police record check comes up clean, no fingerprinting was necessary.
