Documents after pick up question

My documents are ready to be picked up at my courier. I have a question for those that have received thier passports back. When I get my package do I open the envelope? I remember reading somewhere that you open the first envelope but you don't open a second envelope inside the package (which is marked). Kinda a silly question but I don't want to mess up at this stage.

I-864 Qualifying Quarters

The instructions for an I-864 say the sponsor is responsible for supporting the immigrant financially, should they require it. There are exceptions for immigrants to not have a sponsor. One of which is the following:

"Any intending immigrant who has earned or can receive credit for 40 qualifying quarters (credits) of work in the United States. In addition to their own work, intending immigrants may be able to secure credit for work performed by a spouse during marriage and by their parents while the immigrants were under 18 years of age. The Social Security Administration (SSA) can provide information on how to count quarters of work earned or credited and how to provide evidence of such. "

As I understand it, the financial sponsor is responsible for the immigrant until they naturalize or have met 40 qualifying quarters of employment.

In my case, I was employed for 21 quarters of work prior to our immigration journey, while I was legally working in the US on an L1 visa. So, is hubs on the hook for only 19 quarters? Do my previous quarters count, despite not being 40 full quarters? This is totally philosophical in nature as I'm completely happy in my relationship and will be applying for citizenship next month under the 3 year rule, but I'm curious, none the less.

FAFSA & other student loans while LPR?

Hi all!

I came to the US on a K1 Visa and have my Legal Permanent Resident card (expires October 2029). I want to go to college for Electrical Apprenticeship to better my career, but the 10 month course is $18,499.

My understanding is that in my current status I am NOT allowed to receive any sort of federal assistance, including FAFSA, otherwise the federal government can and will sue my wife for the amount received.

Does anyone know if that applies to FAFSA and other federal grants or loans? I ve been trying to find this information online and it s very sparse.

Thank you all!

Hey gang - I've moved back to Canada, and have tried to give up my green card at the US border a couple of times while traveling back there, but they always give me some scary speech about why I shouldn't do it and so forth. I've made up my mind to give up my green card, but I was wondering what the official end date is when you submit I-407 by mail? If at all possible, it'd be nice to be able to have this year be my final year filing taxes in the United States. If I file my I-407 by mail, what's my residency ending date for tax filing purposes? Based on the form and some online discourse, it looks like it'd be the last time I went to the United States as a permanent resident, but I wanted to check here to see if it was the day where the form actually gets processed by USCIS.

Does anyone have any information or experience with this? I'd like to avoid traveling to the United States to do this because the agents at the border kind of make it an intimidating transaction.

Edit - also with form I-407, i'm not 100% sure if I have a USCIS online account. I immigrated back in 2012, and I don't remember that being a part of the process. Is it a massive deal if I leave that blank if I DO have such an account? I wouldn't begin to know how to retrieve that account.

I filed my AOS package (I-485, I-141, I-765) on December 3rd and just got the receipt notification texts from USCIS this morning. However; they haven t cashed our check yet. Is this normal? In most cases I ve seen, they don t sent the NOAs until the check is cashed.
