My brother thinks he "normalized" his alcohol intake. I and my entire family can assure you that he is a raging alcoholic. If you are an alcoholic there is no way to drink moderately.

However, my dad and another brother as well as an aunt and uncle have all successfully stayed sober with the help of AA. My Dad's been sober at least 20 years now, but still attends AA meetings at least twice a week.

A lot of alcoholics fail the first few times they try to sober up and think AA won't work. If you really want to sober up, eventually you will. Its a very hard thing to give up cos then you have to face all the things you did while boozing. Just keep going back to the meeting and lean on your AA sponsor - making sure your sponsor has been in the program a few years.

Not sure if you're asking for yourself or about a loved one, but I wish you the best of luck either way. Its not easy for anyone who has an acoholic in their life.

I have a friend who has been hitting the bottle pretty hard lately. Sad, I don't know what I can do about it. Pisses him off when I say "No, you can't stay up drinking til 8 AM every night at my house."

true sister nessa and sister fracas..someone who is alochol dependence has both physical and psychological addiction and social drinking will never work for them...

A disease in which a person craves alcohol, is unable to limit his or her drinking, needs to drink greater amounts to get the same effect, and has withdrawal symptoms after stopping alcohol use.

Alcohol dependence, as described in the DSM-IV, is a psychiatric diagnosis describing a physical dependence on alcohol. It is differentiated from alcohol abuse by the presence of symptoms such as tolerance and withdrawal

Agreed, there is nothing fun about watching someone drink themself to death. The withdrawal symptoms of alcohol can be severe, though plenty of people ruin their lives before getting to that point.

All too common in Russia as well.

My sensei is a alcoholic. He been dry for over 20 years. He doesn't like going to family weddings and stuff. Eveyone gets drunk and he wants to. He says the cravings are still there. I don't think you can ever control drinking moderately if your an alcoholic.
