So what if he was flying the Mexican and American flags side-by-side - for those of you who think the American flag should be flown higher in this instance, would you still find side-by-side offensive or is that okie dokie?

When I first moved to the US I worked in a bookstore in CA. I found it pretty hilarious that one of the customers got outraged over some novelty "Bushism" mints that they sold at the cash register. As if people can be so petty that they take issue with mindless and irrelevant things.

Too much time on their hands, as well as an overinflated sense of self.

In this instance, is the law unconstitutional? Is that why it's not enforced and there's no punishment?

Yes, according to this part of the quoted text:

punitive enforcement would conflict with the First Amendment right to freedom of speech, as the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled when the subject has come up in the past.

OK. So what happens to a law that's unconstitutional? Does it get erased from the books? Or does it stay and be argued in court, based on the individual circumstances?

You know there are laws in several southern states prohibiting sodomy but the supreme court has ruled those laws to be unconstitutional.... as far as I'm aware those laws are still on the books even though they can no longer be enforced. Of course, in SC there are still laws stating you can beat your wife on the courthouse steps on a Sunday with a stick no bigger than your thumb  and another one that requires you to fire a shot (from your shotgun) into the air when approaching an intersection in your horse and carriage

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Well in Canada, generally, 99% of the time when you see the American flag it is flying next to the Canadian - we tend to see this as a sign of friendship.

Interesting.

I dunno - I tend to think that people who get offended by this kind of thing don't have enough to occupy their time.

or maybe they have a sense of pride which seems to be lacking nowadays.

not at all...because it's photobucket and i can't see photobucket at work :D

in another country, the us flag may be flown lower. in the usa, the us flag is higher. not really difficult to grasp i'd think.

well I guess you'd better go picket all those U.S. parks, museums, airports, and other public places where flags of the world are displayed all at the same height.

must be a bummer having to worry about these things...

I think a person can show pride in their country without resorting to petty, mean-spirited acts.
