For the medical exam for K1 is it necessary to get the vaccinations done by the consulate doctor? That's what a legal adviser told me, because she said they want to ensure the vaccinations are done properly. However, I have health insurance and my own doctor would do these vaccinations and I could claim them on my insurance. If I go this route will this cause problems with the consulate doctor? To force us to have the shots with the consulate doctor just seems like a money-making scheme. I'd prefer to go to my own doctor but not if it's going to cause problems at my medical exam. Anyone got any experience with this?

i am currently waiting for my NOA2, and thus didn't have my medical yet, but as far as I know, they really don't care.

i already have all of my vaccinations as i already had a J1 2 years ago, and it would be ridicoulous if they would make trouble. you just need to show them your vaccination-pass-thingy and you're good.

besides that, the vaccination-shots can make you feel really exhausted for a couple of days, and it makes much more sense to get them done in advance, and not the day of the interview, between packing and running to the airport.

in the german forum NOBODY gets them at the medical, and there havn't been problems so far. but i would check with the others from your homecountry!

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Hello,

as far as your question i had friends going on the same process, they all went to the doctor approved by consulate, cause if you make the medical exam at another doctor who is not approved by the consulate that will make you have a such problems so i advice you to search and find out who are the doctors are approved by the consulate and do it before you getting your first package in waiting for the interview.

GOOD LUCK !!!

richie.913, I didn't actually mean bypassing the consulate doctor completely, I just meant for the vaccinations. I still intend to go to the consulate doctor for the actual exam, it's just I'm trying to find out if I can get my vaccinations done BEFORE then, by my own doctor, and just claim for them on my health insurance.

Check with the consulate directly. In Ghana, the vaccinations have to be done by the consulate approved doctor and any other vaccination simply doesn't count. So, in Ghana if you've already had them, you have to do them over. So, I think it's best for you to send an email to the consulate directly and find out if it's okay to use another doctor and provide proof.

K visas DO NOT REQUIRE VACCINATIONS. When you adjust status will be when your vaccinations will be required.

When you get to the US you can go to the health department and the shots are $10 or less each. You can have your spouse locate a CS from the www.uscis.gov website as well as the vaccination suppliment sheet the CS will need to transfer the shot records to. While you are waiting for the interview your spouse can research the CS in your US area and discuss what will need to be done before you file your I-485 AOS.

The Packet 3 from the Ghana consulate states that

You have to get the following tests and vaccinations as part of your US Immigration Medical Examination process:...

Later it states:

Once you have completed the tests and vaccines, request the results from the clinic in a sealed envelope which you can bring with you. You must bring in your medical results with you to your next consular interview, and if you don't have them, you will be re-scheduled.

I suggest confirming with your consulate office what you are required to do and how.

If you can get vaccinated in your country I suggest doing so, it doesn't have to be the civil surgeon, you can go to your doctor or local health center and check which vaccines you'd need. My suggestion of doing so is 'cus some vaccines will require 3 doses and some doses need to administered with an interval of 6 months between them, if you start now you'll have less vaccines to take after you arrive in US, where they could be more expensive (in my case vaccination in Brazil is free so I tried to take them all there, and still had to take 2 last doses here and paid $25 for one and $70 for the other).

And just to clear it up, you'll need your vaccination records when getting vaccines with your own doctor or health care center, as those are proof that you were vaccinated, then you can take those to the civil surgeon and he'll transcribe that to the vaccination record sheet, which you'll want to ask for a copy and take with you to the US, you'll need it for AOS. It's very important to ask for a copy of the vaccination record signed by the civil surgeon.

I got booster shots beforehand with my family doctor and it wasn't a problem. I brought letters and results of blood tests to show the panel physician that I'd been vaccinated so did not require extra vaccinations. The panel physician didn't have any problem with the letters and I received a copy of my vaccination supplement for AOS. I'd check with your panel physician, but if it's possible to avoid the cost of the vaccinations I'd do it.

K visas DO NOT REQUIRE VACCINATIONS. When you adjust status will be when your vaccinations will be required.

While that's true, panel physicians in some countries (including Canada) will require you to have the vaccinations before you enter the US.

K-1 visa does not require vaccinations before the interview or before entry as it is a non-immigrant visa, a panel physician cant change that.

Sorry, wrong phrasing. I know that K medicals don't require the vaccinations to be done at that time.

What I have heard though from the boards is that there are some panel physicians who have asked that vaccinations be dealt with prior to the POE and AOS process. I know from my experience that I was asked specifically to have proof of being vaccinated, or they would do it at the medical exam (for a fee). I'm sure that if I'd asked to defer the vaccinations until I reached the US that I would've been able to, but seeing as how it was free with my own health insurance I didn't see a reason to wait.

Moving on...
