Things that you don't miss (anymore) back in your country

I do not miss putting a euro in a shopping cart to use it. I also don't miss having to bag my own groceries LOL.

I do miss real ice cream - that stuff here doesn't taste real to me LOL .... I miss currywurst, and the ability to take a train all over the country if I needed to.

It is more common to hear people talk about things that they miss back in their country. My wife decided to let go of her "attachments" so she can be free of the emotional baggage everytime she misses a thing or a person or anything. I can agree to a certain point, because it is always hard to let go. She has had struggles letting go during the first few months. And now that she's gradually adjusting to life here in the US, it seems to me that there are things that she used to love/is passionate about back in her country, but doesn't miss/care much about anymore (for example, certain foods, hobbies, choice of movies, people) . For this purpose, we would like to know what are the things in your country that you really like/love/feel passionate about, but don't really care about (at least not that much) anymore. My wife was surprised with her own list.

One thing I don't miss about back home is the sense of division. It just isn't here, people don't look at you funny when you tell them where you live or who you are. They don't care who Gerry Adams, Ian Paisley or what the troubles was or is.. most people reading this will think.. who's that what is that.. wasn't that all about...?

The single biggest thing I miss about back home is socialism, it's like a dirty word here? I don't mind paying 17.5% VAT (TAX) on food, drink or an for an outfit. The price you see is exactly the price you pay, I really miss that!!! I don't mind having access to health care that everyone regardless of income can have. I didn't mind the lack of motorways and copy and paste fast (heart attack) chain stores. There is a lot the US could learn from Europe, a lot Europe could learn from the US!

I don't mind the US, I like it a lot and I'd like it a lot more if we could add some more socialism to the capitalism here to help balance it out a little bit more for the average man on the street.

The more socialism the less people have, lower standard of living, no innovation, it only makes people equally miserable, it is an absolutely wretched system. Destroys people hopes and dreams to succeed and make a better future for themselves. It is the second most inhumane economic system ever devised. Communism being the first!

My beloved Joy is here, married and pregnant!

I don't miss the general loudness of a big, fast paced city like Buenos Aires...paying 180 for a pair of jeans....and dirty streets. Everything else, I miss

The slow-as-heck postal system. Canada Post operates on snails, I swear. Seriously, they're not that bad, but I love the swiftness of USPS. And they deliver six days out of the week!

Other than that, I'm pretty homesick though.

Things I won't miss when I finally move to the US?

1. Not being able to vote for a head of government and head of state

2. The Metric System

3. Terrible fast food choices

4. Nothing open 24 hours

5. Living in the land of no freeways

6. Outrageous income taxes, sales taxes, and socialism in general

7. Government run health care

8. Uncompetitive home loans

9. Government run auto insurance

10. Radio stations that think a four-hour show on preseason hockey training camp is more important than September baseball

11. Watching the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl and having repetitive Canadian commercials spliced in

12. Generally egregious prices for everything.

13. Gas prices

14. People not knowing what an IRA, 401(k), or CD are

15. The entitlement mentality

16. Having to wait until my next foray over the border to buy something substantial

17. $1 and $2 coins

18. Perpetual rain that makes October-to-March feel like a gargantuan slog

19. The magnitude of ridiculous airfare taxes, fees, etc. that must be paid to get a ticket here

20. Paying outlandish shipping fees when I send things and bogus brokerage fees when I receive things

Are you an American? I can't imagine someone other than an American saying that they won't miss the metric system. Also, I don't see anyone outside the U.S. being interested in NFL or Super Bowl.

Erm, I'm Canadian and I watched NFL football all the time when I lived there! And I hated the commercial splicing during the Super Bowl too!

One of my good friends is a HUGE Pittsburgh Steelers fan and would get the NFL package from our local cable service. I just stuck with whatever came on the US channels I got. Lots of people other than Americans like NFL football.

CherryXS -- mail pickup (from our roadside mailboxes) still exists in rural Nova Scotia :)

My husband misses the food, the seaside, etc. back home (Turkey)...but he loves that we (USA) have bottle returns, recycle pick-up programs and organizations like Goodwill, where you can donate items such as clothes to needy people.
