That price tag is a lot smaller than I would have expected. That's about the cost of the Iraq war.

i agree.. i see no issue with those against healthcare for americans..with providing it for the iraqis

Have you ever heard of a government plan that actually met the cost estimate?

I have an idea. Instead of rasing taxes, cover everyone with medicare and cut benefits. Spend the same money, but for everyone. You wouldn't need to cut benefits much anyway, since most people under 50 are generally healthy and cost little to insure. By the time you are 50, you have had enough time to save for additional coverage anyway.

People will still buy private insurance for more comprehensive coverage, but that is the way it is in reality everywhere else. Medicare probably costs more per-capita already than most Western socialized medicine programs. Hospitals, insurance companies and doctors will hate this - I doubt it will happen. Seniors won't want to give up benefits (powerful lobby), and uninsured kids don't get to vote.

She pulled the figure out of her ###.

Australia spends $42 billion a year on healthcare to take care of 21 million people. The US would need to spend at least $350 billion per year to take care of so many people.

Is it doable, yes. But not without a tax increase though to pay for it. The country would need to levy a separate 3% Medicare tax to pay for it..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I wonder what is worse paying more in taxes to cover health care or having people to afraid to seek medical care because of the cost. When 50% of bankruptcies in the US are caused by being unable to pay medical bills something somewhere isn't right.

I personally support a universal healthcare plan but it has to be implemented correctly and not just taxed onto some other budget..

350 billion? Ha - we already do. FY2007 budget is for $389 billion for Medicare and $204 billion for Medicaid. Total Health and Human Services outlays for 2007 are $697,950,000,000.

Cover everyone with the 700 billion a year we already spend, and cut benefits. We should pay the Australians to do it for us, and give taxpayers a $350 billion dollar refund (they can use it to buy private insurance to make up for the benefit cuts).
