Spirit Airlines canceled all flights and is going out of business

Spirit Airlines, the pioneering discount airline that shook up the budget travel business, is shutting down its operations.

The company is in its second bankruptcy and was in serious financial trouble well before the Iran war sent jet fuel prices surging. America’s eighth-largest carrier tried to reach a deal with the Trump administration on an 11th-hour rescue package, but a key group of creditors balked at the proposal.

Spirit is the first major US airline in 25 years to go out of business because of financial problems. Its demise has stranded millions of passengers: Spirit canceled all flights, shut down its customer service and instructed customers not to go to the airport. Customers with Spirit tickets will be issued refunds, and they have been instructed to rebook travel on other carriers.

No surprise here.  Back in December I needed to book a flight for January and it looked like Spirit had the best deal.  I booked it then the next day an article came out that they were in such serious trouble and could fail any day.  It was fortunate I was within the 24 hour period were I was able to cancel and get my full refund.

If at first you don't succeed, then sky diving is not for you.

She does have quite a bit of competition, Seattle calling.

Seattle is a local issue. The overall impact is just to move money from Washington down to Tennessee. The overall financial impact between the two locations will be minimal. Jobs lost in Seattle will be jobs gained in Nashville. Not diminishing its relevance, but the Spirit Airlines disaster proves that Senator Warren’ math ain’t mathin’ 😒

 

The additional costs she forecast in her objection to the JetBlue takeover have turned out to be woefully insignificant compared to the increased fares caused by Spirit Airlines route drawdowns, the loss of airport revenue caused by the passenger decreases that have yet to recover and now the loss of 17,000 jobs and the financial impact of taking their remaining aircraft out of service. That’s over 200 aircraft taken out of service in the last year. Over 75% of those were leased, so there’s another knock-on impact. But a 9 - 10% market share of the domestic airline market was too big of a risk to allow to happen.

 

Senator Warren should never be allowed anywhere near a position of financial responsibility in government. Never ever. ☠️
