I have a question about submitting a family tree for USCIS.

How do you usually present the family tree?

  • My case was previously rejected due to the family tree. I submitted a tree showing only the petitioner, beneficiary, parents, and siblings, but the case was rejected and USCIS did not explain what was wrong. I want to make sure I prepare it correctly this time.

Should I also include grandparents, aunts/uncles, and cousins, or only the petitioner, beneficiary, parents, and siblings?

  • Do I need to prove the relationships of the people shown in the family tree? If so, what types of documents are typically required?
  • Is there any recommended software (better than Word/PDF or PowerPoint)? Does anyone have an example of a finished family tree they’re willing to describe or share?
  • Regarding dates of birth: I don’t know the DOBs of some cousins. Is it acceptable to include only the DOBs I know and leave the others blank?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

In all my years following immigration I have never seen a family tree requested.

And neither have I.  No, you do not have to prove the relationships. Please provide some context.  What was the exact wording of what you are referring to as a "rejection"?  A rejected case is rejected for lack of required information.  "Family Tree" beyond parent information is not required.

Someone was asking yesterday about their family tree as well (see below).

Can you contact your representative to find out if this is a new policy and whether they can get the wording of the policy for you?

Also, I would assume you do need grandparents and aunts/uncles. You are basically trying to prove you are not related and the information you provided only shows you are not siblings. But you could be first cousins. Plus, I think you have to provide the name of parents on the forms, so you are giving them information they already have.

Is it hard to get the DOB of some of the cousins? At least the year would help if you cannot pin point a date. The year can help because then it can be clear, because of their age, that they cannot be parents to either of you.

I wonder if this is just a grab for more data they can keep on file in case anyone on the family tree goes to get a visa.

Thank you for the link for family tree.

After my application for fiancé fiancé was filed, Uscis requested additional evidence as a family tree. After reviewing this additional document, USCIS determined that our relationship was not bona fide.

Thank you for clarifying that beyond parent information is not required. USCIS denied the petition saying our relationship is not bona fide, but they did not explain which part they doubted. The notice was very general, so it is hard to know how to fix it.

Not bona fide means they don't believe it is a genuine relationship.  What evidence did you send to support that?  How much time have you spent together in person, and what evidence for that?  Forget about the family tree.  That's not the issue unless you are brother and sister.
