Applying for an SS Card almost a month and a half after arriving and before getting married for a K1 visa - Is that late? Does the Form I-94 really expire for the Social Security office? Did I screw up?

What documents do I need to apply for an SS card?

Is your I-94 still valid? If so you can still get one. See the link above on the guides section -

Good luck.

Yes, check your I94, but you should still be able to apply for an SSN.

Please complete your timelines. Appointments required for SSA. I'm sure not open due to shut down. All information on social security website.

Thank you!

I already went there today, and they said I need to schedule an appointment first. It might take more time than I anticipated.

Do I have to obtain the Social Security card before I get married?
When and how should I change my name?
I believe it may get confusing to change the name while I am trying to apply for an adjustment of my status. Should I change the name or wait till I get to N400?
Can I apply for a Social Security card the same day I get married?

Thread is moved from the K-1 Case Progress subforum to the Social Security Numbers subforum -- OP is at this stage.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

It makes things easier if you apply for your social security card BEFORE getting married. The reason is that getting married nullifies the K1 visa, so after getting married your next opportunity to get a social security number won't be until you have a green card, which could be a year or more after marriage. Not having the SSN can be a hurdle for things like opening bank accounts, getting a driver's license, and otherwise establishing your life in the US. So that is why the advice is always to apply for your SSN before marriage when on a K1. Unfortunately you have left it pretty late - the usual advice is to apply for your SSN ASAP after arriving, because it does take a while to get an appointment and then for the card to get to you.

You could in theory apply for your social security card on the same day you get married before your marriage ceremony, but that would be cutting it pretty close. It also may depend on the rules where you live. In my county, a social security number for both parties was required, so we wouldn't have been able to get married without it. Some areas allow marriage without an SSN, though. You'll need to look into that for where you live.

It's not the total end of the world if you don't have your SSN before marriage so long as you live in an area where you can get married without it - do not put off getting married because of it. Number one priority is getting married within those 90 days.

I can't speak on name change stuff as I didn't bother with that, but others can advise on that front.

Can get SS card in maiden name before marriage and then update it to married name in the future.

Before chaging name, make sure to check how easy it is to change documents like passport in the country of origin. If name change there is too difficult or impossible, then consider whether the name change is the right move at all. Having name Anna Smith in home country and Anna Brown in the USA is possible, but not ideal for travel, legal and other purposes. It's nice to have consistent name documented in different jurisdictions.
