Hi! Yes! That I would do. And already in N400 there is an option where you check yes and it also another option to check yes to receive a new card.

My question was I didn't update the status to SSA after I got green card in 2016.

You will need to do this as USCIS is no longer doing it

No, USCIS no longer automatically mails Social Security cards to new citizens or those with work authorization. The Social Security Administration's Enumeration Beyond Entry (EBE) program, which facilitated this automatic issuance, has been temporarily paused. Individuals in these situations now need to apply for a Social Security card directly through the SSA, often requiring a visit to a local SSA office.

Sadly, as @JeanneAdil said, this no longer works. I naturalized earlier this year. Checked these boxes on N-400. My status was never updated, so I had go to SSA in person.

US passport is another option instead of certificate of naturalization.

Okay. After I will get approved I will do that.  Thanks!

But my question was I didn't update the status when I got my green card back in 2016. Will it be a problem at the N400 interview?

My SS card still says 'not valid without DHS authorization' 😄. I got my citizenship in 2019. I still need to make an appointment with SSA office to update and get a new card.

You will be fine. Just get it updated after your oath ceremony.

Valid for work only with DHS authorization?

I'd get it updated, as it may raise eyebrows of some incompetent HRs when performing I-9. Then you have to show US passport or certificate of naturalization to prove you can work... On the contrary, SS card without restriction and valid DL or state ID is all you need for I-9 as a citizen.

You should update it as there are some jobs available only to citizens ^per noted on ss card
also Loan officers looking at SS card , give lower rates to USC

for your spouse , if anything happened to you,  there are IRS estate tax breaks when SS card shows USC

Yeah for sure. It's something I need to take care of for sure. I have about 18 years of work credits and apparently SS won't make payouts if I retire outside the US. Also as you mentioned, need to make sure my wife can get spousal benefits in case anything were to happen to me.

Are you sure about this? This seems discriminatory. I never heard of this. Got loans and mortgages. The biggest factor was length of credit history, credit score, income to debt ration and employment history.

When we updated Adil's this was told us by SS officer /plus AI mentions this online

and if things were disciminatory they would not be allowed to bill us for auto insurance due to gender and age but they do

age , gender and income considered in many business transations we do daily including what interest to charge us for credit cards (its not just the credit score)
