Solar Eclipse, April 2024 -- Observations, Comments

Anything remarkable or unremarkable to note about the total solar eclipse on 8 April 2024, post here.

Going to head out with the dog for a little walk in a bit to get her reaction.  She is used to being out walking at 3am, so I doubt it will be much.  I think we are in the 95-98% totality range, so I expect it will be fairly dark.

Kinda disappointing here.

 

We were in the partial zone for (?) half an hour, and it's overcast.  Glancing periodically at the sky for a half-second at a time (didn't have the special glasses), I noticed a crescent sun, showing its sliver on the left, and the crescent shifted to the bottom.

 

It got a little dim, but if no one knew better, they'd have reasonably attributed it to the clouds.

 

Researchers are interested in how animals will react, because there are few data.  The three prevalent crepuscular critters here (active at dawn & dusk) are squirrels, mosquitoes, and cats.  I saw no cats, saw one squirrel heading up a tree, and surprisingly wasn't eaten by mosquitoes -- this will come this evening.

 

Cat T-B. (100% indoors) slept through the whole thing.

 

During the last eclipse in 2017 or whenever, I was driving.  It got darker than usual, and what light there was had a strange, intense glow to it.

 

Next eclipse is supposed to be in 20 years...

I keep my dog inside, as he's dumb/blind enough to look right at the sun. These days I stick goggles on him, but still he's just fine today - happily snoozing by my side. He was a bit reactive to the earthquake the other day though. I will say that there were plenty of birds making noise earlier, but when it started they all went silent. The woodchuck was also poking around but quickly went back into his den.

 

It's a partly cloudy day so that hasn't helped but.. otherwise it got mildly dark, the color it would be if there was a strong storm on the horizon. The sun is coming back out so I'm assuming it's almost over.

We had fairly clear skies and as mentioned earlier, just outside of the total zone.  It did get a bit darker, but I think thought it would be more pronounced, but it definitely felt different than just clouds.  Overall, the darkest part last 2-3 minutes.

Is this for real, or just a bunch of social media addicts needing attention?  Not sure how you get insomnia in the middle of the day unless you are a night shifter.

Had the total eclipse for about 3 minutes 30, partial 3ish hours.  Total eclipse was amazing, bats came out!

North of Lake Champlain (VT/NY), in Canada.

Bats appeared from... the trees, I think?

That's hilarious. I'm guessing the cycle stuff has something to do with the old myth of women's cycles and moon phases and a great deal of attention seeking. If a woman generally has something happening every 28-32 days there's going to be an eclipse somewhere in the world eventually coinciding mathematically. Anxiety stuff? Well the amount of "world's gonna end!" nonsense I've heard from some people would be enough to generate anxiety in plenty. I would imagine that there would be some people with mental issues or sundown syndrome to be affected.
